Lecture title: Micro molecules, big impact: New approaches to neurodevelopmental disorders – Front Row lecture with Giordano Lippi, PhD Description: The human brain depends on remarkable precision. As neurons develop, they must produce the right proteins at the right place and time to build the complex networks that drive thought, learning and behavior. In this free Front Row lecture, Scripps Research Associate Professor Giordano Lippi will explore how tiny molecules called microRNAs help control this process. His research has revealed that microRNAs regulate many genes linked to neurodevelopmental disorders, including severe intellectual disability and epilepsy. A salsa takeover is coming to the North City district in San Marcos this August as their “Dancing in the Street” series returns, bringing a free outdoor dance night held alongside its popular weekly Farmers Market. This month’s featured style is salsa on August 28, bringing upbeat Latin rhythms, quick footwork, and a lively social dance floor, all led by the professional dancers of Bella Lux Entertainment. The evening begins with a special performance from 6 to 6:15 p.m., setting the tone before the crowd is invited to learn the moves themselves during a guided dance class from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. The night wraps up with open dancing and a live DJ from 7:15 p.m. to 8 p.m. Between sets, guests can explore the farmers market, stop by North City’s eateries for sips and bites, and make their way back to the dance floor throughout the evening. This class meets weekly on Tuesdays, 3-4 times each month, from 4 – 5:30 p.m. Children age 6-12 years are welcome! Welcome to Craft Collective’s Organic Garden Club for kids! It’s a weekly space where kids may enjoy a harvest-culinary-prepared treat as they learn all about plot planning, companion planting, organic gardening maintenance, harvesting, seed saving, composting, and activities that progress the garden with each season. Garden Club gives kids an opportunity to become good stewards of the garden as they see firsthand the impact of their efforts. And this school year, each meeting will include a half hour of garden-related crafting, followed by plenty of time in the garden! Gardening is proven to have a positive, grounding impact on mood and brain chemistry for all ages, but especially for children. Working in the garden helps kids grow & expand in so many ways! Kids practice and hone fine motor skills; use their five senses to learn about their environment; get excited about food and making healthy, nutritious choices; and feel connected to a larger picture and purpose in life. When we grow our own food, we are all more connected to it, and kids are especially more apt to eat things they’ve grown themselves in the garden! This class meets weekly on Tuesdays for this 2-month series. Series 1: Sept 15, 22, 29, Oct 6, 14, 20, 27 Series 2: Nov 3, 10, 17, Dec 1, 8, 15 Ages 13-18 years welcome! Lead instructor, Steffi Dotson, teaches this class that covers the properties of wood, machine safety and woodworking basics. Students will learn a mix of woodworking techniques, including hand tools and safe practice of machine operations. Depending on the specific project, joinery techniques, proper sanding and finishing are part of the curriculum. Each attendee will make their own project. Because safety is top priority, and each student works at their own speed, students are encouraged to focus on skill building, with future 2-month series incorporating more skills and different projects. All materials are included. This class meets weekly on Mondays, 3-4 times each month, from 4 – 5:30 p.m. Ages 6-12 years welcome! This 4-week, repeatable series is perfect for kids who love to make things! Children learn tool safety, and get acquainted with various woodworking hand tools and techniques. They learn about wood as a material, and how to properly glue, hammer nails, and use manual drills. The goal of this class is to build children’s confidence through woodcraft. The focus for younger children is creating patience, developing fine motor skills, material exploration, and safe, proper use of the tools. More mature students will increase their focus to include craftsmanship, and more challenging methods of building projects and problem-solving. We will work together in the same space, but age groups/projects will be divided into two groups based on age and level of maturity. This class uses mostly hand tools. We teach safe methods for sawing, drilling, and clamping wood in this class. We encourage children to disconnect from screen-time conversations and video game thinking during our time together. This is a time for children to slow down, figure out tools, how they work, and make functional objects with their own hands. Occasionally, we use a plug-in tool with students (like a drill press). These machines are used 1-on-1 with students and instructors. If you prefer your child not use plug-in tools, just let us know!
