Welcome To The 13th Annual San Diego Arab Film Festival! April 12 & 13 and 19 - 21, 2024 The San Diego Arab Film Festival is back for 2024 with live, in-person presentations of feature length and short films at the Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art. The festival will open on Friday, April 12, and present 8 screenings, each showcasing one feature film and one short film, from across the Arab World. Each evening, the festival will also offer cafeteria-style Arabic dinner. We are excited to bring these films to the San Diego community! Tickets are on sale now, with individual screenings at $15 (discounted to $12 for students), 3-ticket packages for $40 and passes for all 8 screenings for $80. Arabic dinners will be available each evening for $15. Blue Water Film Festival celebrates UN – World Water Day and promotes San Diego, California as a hub for marine science, naval exploration and an epicenter for environmental storytelling. Exploring versatile running stitches The technique of decorating a fabric surface with running stitches can be found in many cultures. In this class students will learn 2 types of stitching: Sashiko, which means “little stabs” in Japanese, and Kantha, which translates to “rags” in Sanskrit. The primary function of the stitching was to mend and reuse old but treasured fabric; to gather layers of fabric which then provided warmth and insulation; and/or strengthen the fabric for heavy usage. However, the decorative aspect of this timeless practice became just as important and valued, and its rich “vocabulary” translates into endless pattern variations. Learn traditional Sashiko patterns using simple grid-based stitches such as “zigzag,” “field of flowers,” and traditional patterns using curves such as “ocean waves,” and “rising steam.” We will also cover the organic and flowing art of Kantha stitching. You will create an embroidered piece of hand-dyed wool felt fabric that will be assembled into a beautiful eyeglass case or small pouch. Students are recommended to bring a thimble if they have one. $10 material fee payable to the instructor at the start of class. St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center will host its 46th Annual Haute with Heart Fashion Show, with the theme “Couture,” paying homage to one of the fashion capitals of the world, Paris. Inspired by a piece from artist and SMSC student Mark Rimland, guests will be taking a day trip to the City of Love. Attendees will be greeted by live Parisian inspired music, fabulous boutique shopping, a silent auction, and free flowing champagne. Once the ballroom doors open, all messieurs and madames will enjoy a delicious Parisian inspired luncheon, special up-lifting performances by SMSC students, live auction, and a one-of-a-kind fashion show produced by the talented Kristi Brooks, who has worked with top designers and styled celebrities around the globe. SMSC is a nonprofit organization that serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. All funds raised will benefit the organization's nationally recognized innovative programs, where they combine the culture of care and creativity within quality programs to provide liberal arts education, practical skills development, employment, and dignity for a lifetime. SMSC allows students to develop creative outlets, learn marketable skills, and gain a sense of independence and self-esteem. Over 400 students attend SMSC, ranging from recent high school graduates to seniors in their eighties. About Danielle Angeloni Danielle has been singing before she could talk and dancing before she could walk. She writes jazz/pop/soul music reminiscent of artists such as Norah Jones, Emily King, and Lianne la Havas. Coming from a musical family, she’s also heavily influenced by many different styles including jazz, Motown, psychedelic rock, and alternative genres. When she isn’t writing, performing, or concert hopping Danielle works as a board-certified music therapist serving children with neurodevelopmental differences. Danielle received a scholarship to study vocal performance, songwriting, and music therapy at Berklee College of Music where she graduated cum laude in 2015.
