  • EDITOR’S NOTE: San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan is disputing the story KPBS reported on racial disparities in special charges that can lead to life without parole. KPBS’s story relied on a data analysis from a researcher who attributed cases to DAs based on disposition date. The DA’s office provided an analysis that attributed cases to DAs based on filing date. It showed no racial disparity in making these special charges against Black and white defendants when looking only at multiple murder cases during DA Stephan’s tenure. KPBS has clarified the story to include more detail about the analysis and the data it used. Go to the story to learn more. First, in a new KPBS series, we talk with a local mom who shares how she makes ends meet in San Diego County. Then, the second part of a series on Black defendants having a higher likelihood of facing charges that could lead to life without parole than their counterparts. . We also tell you details around California psychiatric hospitals having a new deadline to adjust to new staffing rules. Also, Olympic soccer is coming to San Diego! Plus, our Cinema Junkie offers a creative alternative to Super Bowl Sunday.

  • Join us at Piper for an intimate culinary collaboration with Uka Sake, where innovative coastal cuisine meets the refined elegance of premium Japanese sake. This one night only dinner experience celebrates balance, seasonality, and craftsmanship through a meticulously designed multi course menu. The evening begins with a trio of playful passed bites, each thoughtfully paired with the bright, expressive character of Uka sake. Guests will savor a sake cured salmon cornette kissed with yuzu kosho and chives, a dramatic flambéed oyster enriched with XO mignonette and sansho pepper, and a whimsical Kejora sweet potato bomboloni glazed with aged balsamic. A warm interlude follows as Piper’s kitchen presents an indulgent steamed bun with caviar and bone marrow butter, bridging comfort and luxury. The progression continues with a geoduck crudo, accented by rhubarb, green strawberry umeboshi, and a refreshing tomato–olive oil granita—an exploration of oceanic delicacy and vibrant acidity. For the second course, guests enjoy charcoal grilled sable, elegantly paired with caviar, roasted leeks, and a shio koji beurre blanc that harmonizes beautifully with Uka’s nuanced sake profiles. The evening culminates in a rich, expressive finale: A5 wagyu beef accompanied by king trumpet mushroom custard and a deep black garlic bordelaise—an umami driven dish designed to complement the depth and structure of Uka’s premium selections. Throughout the night, guests will experience bespoke sake pairings and insights into Uka’s brewing philosophy, creating a journey that is equal parts sensory, educational, and celebratory. An evening for gourmands, sake lovers, and anyone who appreciates the art of a truly exceptional dining experience. Piper on Facebook / Instagram
