“The Garners” is a modern vintage duo/trio that embraces gypsy jazz, 1920’s and 30’s jazz, blues, and folk. They are writers of music as well, and you will find that the inspiration behind their originals comes from these classic eras/genres. Raggedly sophisticated, The Garner’s mysterious sweetness will entrance even the most immovable listener. With Lorelei on Tenor Ukulele, Jon on Gypsy Guitar, and both singing from the deep wells of our booming hearts, our music will transport you back when times were harder, yet the good times, more colorful, vibrant, and bold. She’s a little bit country, he’s a little bit rock ‘n’ roll… well, sort of. Lorelei, vocals and ukulele, is a classically trained vocalist that has fallen in love with swing jazz and Americana. Jon, vocals and guitar, is a certified jazz nerd having fallen in love with Billie Holiday, Lester Young, and Charlie Christian at the age of 16. He also has a soft spot for roots music, especially Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee. They decided to make it easier to split the check and got married in October, 2015. Their whole life is music. They gig, teach, compose, and record. They can be found performing their blend of swing classics, gypsy jazz, Americana, and originals all over Southern California. The MiraCosta College Symphony Orchestra (MCCSO) invites you to join us for an eventful evening of music-making, featuring the incredibly talented young artist winners of the MTAC of San Diego's concerto competition. Three soloists will join the orchestra for an amazing display of poise and virtuosity. In addition, the MCCSO will present Respighi's image-invoking, Pines of Rome. Consider how the body is present through its absence in art by creating a papier mâché mask. We will draw inspiration from Eleanor Antin’s "100 Boots" (1971-1973), the poignant photographic novel with an intriguing journey; David Hammons "Champ" (1989), which highlights the precariousness of success; and My Barbarian’s "Universal Declaration of Infantile Anxiety Situations Reflected in the Creative Impulse" (2013), which incorporates handmade masks, props, and costumes into live performances and video performances. "Reflections" is an art-making workshop series designed to serve adults 55 and older. Session 3: November 10 & November 17 In this workshop series participants will explore how ideas about the body integrate into contemporary art. Through close looking, we will engage with artworks where the body is present, and where its notable absence invokes the body. Each workshop will include an investigation of contemporary art-making techniques and materials. No prior art experience is required. Transportation will be provided, if required. Participants may join one session (two days) or more!

We are pleased to announce that the sixth annual Bi-national Re:Border Conference will take place on Tuesday, October 15. Add date to your calendar now. This year’s theme, “Designing Oportunidades,” is inspired by our San Diego-Tijuana region’s designation as the 2024 World Design Capital. This year’s conference will be held at San Diego State University, co-hosted by SDSU and Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Norte (UABC) in collaboration with other U.S. and Mexican partners. The conference will include interactive sessions involving interdisciplinary teams of researchers, educators, artists, public policy experts, industry leaders and community members. The conference will be bilingual, in English and in Spanish, including simultaneous translation sessions and activities. Planned sessions will address opportunities in ecological planning, social development, public and mental health, education access, economic policy, talent development, social inclusion, infrastructure development and cyber security. Join us on Friday, July 26 at Normal Heights United as Songwriter Sanctuary continues a stellar summer lineup featuring the finest songwriters in San Diego. This month, Aaron Bowen, Angel René Wilson, and Francis Blume will share original music performed in a Nashville-style round hosted by the legendary Jeff Berkley. A full-time honors English major and law student at San Diego Mesa College, Angel René Wilson balances rigorous academics with his roles as a performer, writer, and founder of MARTYR, a local music and arts production company. He is currently working on his debut album, a book, and a short film, all set for release in 2025, while planning to transfer to UCLA in the fall. Aaron Bowen, a Southern California native, blends acoustic jazz and folk with a European flair, evoking Django Reinhardt and Paul Simon. With four generations of musicians in his family, Aaron's decade-long career as a songwriter and producer has flourished. Besides performing and producing, he builds unique electric guitars, inspired by his mentor at High Spirit Guitars in San Diego. Aaron's mission is to create and share authentic music and instruments, inspiring others to be true to themselves. Francis Blume, a singer/songwriter from Vista, CA, crafts a vintage sound that transports listeners to a nostalgic era. Drawing inspiration from icons like Roy Orbison and Elvis, his music blends heartfelt emotion with the charm of the 1950s and 60s. Known for his crooning style and evocative performances, Blume captures the essence of a bygone time, offering a refreshing and timeless musical experience. Time: Doors at 6:30 p.m., Show at 7:00 p.m. Suggested Donation: $10 (all ages) but please be generous in your support of these top tier talents whose creative work is their livelihood. All donations go to artists. No one turned away for lack of funds.
