Valentine's Day is around the corner, and a local nonprofit is celebrating the season of love through a variety of artwork. St. Madeleine Sophie's Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is hosting the "Gotta Have Heart" art show on Friday, February 9 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This free public reception will present the Sophie's artists' latest Valentine's Day-inspired exhibit that runs until the end of March. The student artists will showcase their love-themed pieces, including a weather-inspired collection of umbrellas embellished with original designs, paper mache´ sculptures, contemporary jewelry, heart prints, mosaics, and a Weaving Rainbow. Guests can expect a showcase of colorful and creative works done by students of St. Madeline's Sophie's Center. Artwork sales directly support Sophie’s artists and art program, with 40% going to the artists and 60% to the art program. Sophie’s Gallery is an art studio where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are given the opportunity and tools needed to realize their full creative potential. Students are taught a variety of media, including print-making, jewelry-making, painting, charcoal, pastels, fabric arts, and more. All of the classes are taught by professional artists. The Super Dentists are excited to announce their participation in this year’s annual Halloween Candy Buy-Back program, November 1-6 helping kids turn candy into cash. Starting the morning after Halloween, kids can bring candy to any of The Super Dentists’ six offices and exchange it for cash. Through this program, kids receive $1 for each pound of candy they bring in. The Super Dentists will donate thousands of pounds of candy collected to active-duty service members to enjoy. South Bay Earth Day returns to Bayfront Park! Update: Chula Vista’s South Bay Earth Day celebration now features a new, free, headline performance by genre-bending band Ozomatli! This celebration will feature a host of family-friendly activities, workshops, exhibits, vendors, art, food and drink, nonprofits, how-to and all-day entertainment featuring a nationally recognized, surprise headline recording artist. In addition to celebrating our precious, fragile planet and its bounty, South Bay Earth Day will engage and motivate visitors to choose environmentally friendly products and lifestyle choices, learn and practice, sustainable and mindful habits. Highlights of the zero-waste, day-long activation will include: · Fix-it-Clinic. Repair extends the life and reduces the environmental footprint of devices, furnishings and objects. Have something that needs fixing from lighting and gadgets to small electronics and mechanical devices? Bring them in! Mend your favorite outfit. Repair road and mountain bikes. One of our experts will help you evaluate, diagnose and fix it if they can. · Tie-Dye Workshop. Upcycle your plain (light-colored) garments and fabrics into original, colorful creations. · Live Entertaiment. From the KPBS Spring Arts Guide: Playwright James Ijames won a Pulitzer Prize for drama for his spin on Shakespeare's "Hamlet," which brings us Juicy, a queer, smart, Black college student faced with the ghost of his father who shows up at a family barbecue looking for revenge. But these generational woes don't quite play out like Hamlet himself might have expected. Ijames' take is about finding agency and stepping out of the cycles of trauma and violence.
