A storyteller stands behind a little wooden theater, also known as a storybox, and reveals a series of illustrations that tell a tale. This program is recommended for ages 3-5. While conducting opportunistic regional survey in summer 2022 in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, Belize, Dr. Jon Spenard’s Rio Frio Regional Archaeological Project was informed of a series of granitic rock debitage piles nearby. Investigations revealed them to be ancestral Maya quarries and ground stone tool workshops, the first of their kind recorded anywhere in the Maya region. Naming the site the Buffalo Hill Quarries, the project mapped over a dozen extraction features (quarry pits and cut faces) surrounded by debitage piles spread over an area of approximately 16 hectares (40 acres). The site continued, but time did not permit its full documentation. Noted throughout the mapped area were dozens of production tools and discarded objects in various stages of reduction. Aided by data from an aerial LiDAR survey of the region, the project returned in summer 2023 to finish mapping the site and conduct test excavations on an extraction locus to investigate ancestral Maya quarrying methods and techniques. In this talk, Dr. Spenard will present the results of those two field seasons, introduce more results from the LiDAR survey, and discuss the next stages of the project, including examining who the quarry workers were and how their products may have been distributed. Carmen Cuenca (Mexico City,1958) is Executive Director of INSITE Proyectos de Arte AC, the non-profit established to facilitate the development of INSITE in Mexico. She has played key roles with INSITE since 1993—from overseeing the production and permitting of artists projects to promoting and maintaining binational institutional collaborations to directing administration and fundraising efforts. In addition to her involvement with INSITE over the past twenty-seven years, Cuenca was Director of the Tamayo Museum of Contemporary Art in Mexico City (2011-2014); Subdirector for Visual Arts at the Centro Cultural Tijuana (2006-2009) where she oversaw the construction of EL CUBO, the city’s first traditional museum space; and Executive Director of the Mexican Cultural Institute at the Mexican Consulate in San Diego. Cuenca studied Art History at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. Andrea Torreblanca (Mexico City, 1979) has a master’s in curatorial studies from CCS, Bard College, New York. Torreblanca has held several curatorial positions in Mexican institutions, including Associate Curator at the Museo Tamayo; Coordinator at Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros; Deputy Director for the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art; and Collection Manager at the Museo de las Californias at CECUT. She is currently the Director of Curatorial Projects at INSITE, for which she conceived Commonplaces, a curatorial platform being developed in different regions around the world, including Baja California (MX)-San Diego (US), where she is the editor-curator of the five-year project The Sedimentary Effect. Jane Gordon, a pregnant housewife, is abducted by robots, taken to the rainforest, and forced to perform Hedda Gabler by her robot captors. Meanwhile Nugget, her ten-year-old daughter, with the aid of her milquetoast father, an eager documentary filmmaker and her small arms dealing uncle must rescue Jane – whether she wants to be saved or not. As we approach the AI singularity, Heddatron constructs a bizarre and strangely familiar world of reality TV and rocket launchers where everyone, artificial or otherwise, just wants to feel a little bit human. For over 1,000 years, Japan has produced some of the world’s finest paper, using strong natural fibers and exceptional production techniques passed down through the generations. Japanese handmade paper, known as washi (和紙) is still made in some areas of Japan and used in painting, calligraphy, origami, and other traditional art forms. Recently, contemporary Japanese artists have been turning to this supple yet sturdy material, using it as a medium for creating highly textured two-dimensional works, complex sculptures, and dramatic installations. Employing techniques ranging from layering, weaving, and dying, to twisting, folding, and cutting, these artists demonstrate the endless contemporary applications of this ancient material. This exhibition, "Washi Transformed," focuses on washi as a medium for contemporary art in Japan and spotlights the works of nine very different contemporary Japanese artists who are exploring the artistic potential of this traditional material. The artists – Hina Aoyama, Eriko Horiki, Kyoko Ibe, Yoshio Ikezaki, Kakuko Ishii, Yuko Kimura, Yuko Nishimura, Takaaki Tanaka, Ayomi Yoshida – all push the boundaries of Japanese washi art in terms of texture, dimension, and scale, creating works that challenge our assumptions about the nature of the material. Their abstract paper sculptures, lyrical folding screens, dramatic installations, and highly textured wall pieces all demonstrate the resilience and versatility of washi as a medium in the realm of international contemporary art. "Washi Transformed: New Expressions in Japanese Paper" was organized by Meher McArthur and is toured by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC.
