Kick off the new year with the Borrego Art Institute and its annual showcase of contemporary Latin American art. Artists of Latino heritage or art that has been influenced by Latino culture, including paintings, photography and mixed media, will be featured in the main gallery. A strong contingent of Latino artists from Baja California will round out the show with exciting new work. In the north gallery, award-winning painter Jose Luis Nunez will present a solo exhibit of 20 original paintings highlighting the southern California desert. Nunez works primarily in oils and acrylics and is fascinated by the effects of light and shade on his subjects. Nunez will also teach a landscape painting course on January 20. Mariachi Mixteco will perform at the opening reception Jan. 6 from 3-5 p.m. The reception is part of the Borrego Springs ArtWalk and goes until 7:00 p.m. The shows run through Jan. 28. A local environmental group is preparing to take the International Boundary and Water Commission to court over repeated failures to corral the San Diego region's cross-border sewage problem. The situation may lead to the revival of other lawsuits settled a year ago.

Seabreeze Craft Chocolates hosts a free kids chocolate making class the first Sunday of every month. The 90 minute classes begin at 12 p.m. and are designed for children aged 5 and above. The engaging experience combines fun and education, offering kids the chance to explore the world of chocolate making. Kids will get to tap into their inner Willy Wonka and create their own chocolate bar while learning the art of chocolate decoration and design. All materials and equipment are provided, and whatever the kids make during the class is theirs to take home and enjoy. A parent or guardian must accompany the child(ren) at all times.
