  • This year’s gala will take place on Saturday, April 27 at 6:00 p.m. outside, under the stars, on the grounds of the 90,000-square-foot warehouse facility in Miramar. The outdoor event will feature live musical entertainment performed by Republic of Music, fabulous silent and live auction items, specialty hors d’oeuvres prepared by renowned local chefs, and a multi-course dinner. Proceeds will benefit the Food Bank’s vital hunger-relief programs, including the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program, which provides weekend food-filled backpacks to children living in poverty who are at risk of hunger over the weekend when free school meals are unavailable.

In tribute to our rich history and the contributions of past employees who have become successful chefs, this series will feature the culinary skills of these individuals. Each month in 2024, we will host these chefs, offering exclusive dining experiences. Get ready for a diverse array of flavors that showcase the talents nurtured at George's at the Cove, making this anniversary a sensory feast. San Diego native Connor McVay started as cook at Georges California Modern. He moved to Los Angeles where he worked under Chef Wolfgang Puck and Chef Lee Hefter for the better part of a decade most recently as the Executive Chef of the Hotel Bel Air. Christine Rivera was a cook in California Modern and the Ocean Terrace and was then promoted to Executive Chef of Galaxy Taco, Georges at the Cover’s sister restaurant.   • Point Loma’s Liberty Station is proud to host its newest community event, Anchored in Wellness: A Day of Mindfulness and Movement at Liberty Station. The daylong celebration will take place on Saturday, June 29 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. in Liberty Station's Ingram Plaza. The outdoor wellness festival will feature two stages, individually dedicated to movement or mindfulness, to offer everything from a good sweat to grounding meditation. Anchored in Wellness will feature experiential activations from leading San Diego's fitness and wellness experts, including yoga classes instructed by CorePower and YogaSix, Pilates class instructed by Point Loma Club Pilates, yin sound bath and meditation guided by Riff Yoga, bootcamp HIIT class led by Fit Athletic Club, cold plunges and breathwork led by Soul Plunge, pop up pickleball hosted by VOLO and more.   • Kelly Akashi (b. 1983, Los Angeles) is known for her materially hybrid works that are compelling both formally and conceptually. Originally trained in analog photography, the artist is drawn to fluid, impressionable materials and old-world craft techniques, such as glass blowing and casting, candle making, bronze and silicone casting, and rope making. Encompassing a selection of artworks made over the past decade, "Kelly Akashi: Formations" features a newly commissioned series in which Akashi explores the inherited impact of her family’s imprisonment in a Japanese American incarceration camp during World War II. Organized by the San José Museum of Art, "Kelly Akashi: Formations" is the first major exhibition and catalog of Akashi’s work. The exhibition will be on view from Sept. 21, 2023–Feb. 18, 2024 in San Diego, following presentations at the San José Museum of Art and the Frye Art Museum, Seattle.
