  • This Rally 4 Culture unites civic and arts leaders, arts supporters, and multidisciplinary artists to support the region’s creative community and economy by learning about AB 812, California’s affordable artist housing bill. From 4 p.m. - 5 p.m., there will be brief words from local leaders and a live theatrical performance by the political comedy troupe Culture Clash. From 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. pm, guests will have ongoing opportunities to join a drum circle, hear live music, and create some DIY art. Bring a hat, T-shirt, tote, or similar item to upcycle.   • Join us for a meaningful event to support the Garden of Innocence, a non profit organization that provides dignified burials for abandoned and unidentified children in San Diego. Our intention for the evening is to honor the children of Garden of Innocence with Kundalini yoga movement, songs and chanting led by Lena Bravo, followed by a sound healing experience with Rebekah Finn. This event is for all yogis - seasoned and beginners! No experience necessary. Bring your yoga mat and settle in for an evening of community, connection and healing. 100% of the proceeds go to Garden of Innocence. Many of those who work in the death care industry are drawn to holistic ways of grieving and healing, and we're excited to share the 'other side' of our death care team at this event: Lena Bravo-Olsher is the owner of Bravo Family Mortuary along with her husband Steve. She's passionate about providing personalized, compassionate care to the families she serves as a Funeral Director and Embalmer. Lena is also a certified Kundalini Yoga Instructor and will be guiding us through movement, songs and chanting at this event. Rebekah Finn is a certified Death Doula and manages the team at Topkare Hospice. She's also incredibly musically gifted and will be leading our sound healing segment at this event which will include a wide range of instruments, drums and vocals. Penny Waugh is a Home Funeral Guide and founder of The Death Network, she's passionate about lifting the taboo around talking about death and is part of the movement to normalize the narrative about death and dying.   • In this beginner-friendly course, students will learn slab building techniques to create their own vases using simple tools and techniques; no potter’s wheel required. Students will learn the differences between soft slab construction and stiff/hard slab construction to construct their own forms and patterns. The course will focus on three different vase shapes: simple cylinder, teardrop, or angular. Using the same slab building technique, students may also create small bud vases for singular flowers. Students will complete the course with a fully functional vase(s). While this is a beginner friendly course, more intermediate and advanced students may also join. Students will learn how to: wedge clay roll out slabs using a rolling pin and wooden guides compress slabs using a rubber rib and/or paddles strengthen clay in order to reduce air bubbles, cracks, and warping during the drying process use PVC pipes to create cylinder vases cut out shapes using patterns templates made of cardboard or cardstock attach slabs using the “score and slip” process, where joined seams are either visible or invisible decorate vases with ribbon tool or clay texture rollers soften rims of vases using ribs and chimoy clothes on banding wheel Materials: Please purchase a standard size wooden rolling pin and a beginners pottery tool kit. You do not need to purchase an extensive toolkit for this course, but please buy a kit which includes a metal rib, fettling knife, and scoring tool. Beginner kits are often very minimal but if you choose to continue pottery, the latter tools are incredibly helpful and you will likely need them later. If the metal rib, knife, and scoring tool are difficult to find, you can purchase a basic kit and buy these tools separately at Freeform Ceramics in National City, CA. Please bring a notebook/sketchbook and pen to class to keep track of wonderful ideas.
