  • Anat Cohen, renowned for her expressive virtuosity and infectious charisma, has been an international jazz star for two decades, with a long string of releases ranging from hard-swingers to lilting balladry, exploring a world of music along the way. The perennial winner of “Clarinetist of the Year” titles from DownBeat, Jazz Times, and the Jazz Journalists Association, Fresh Air’s Terry Gross credits Cohen with “bringing the clarinet to the world” and The New York Times hails her a “Master.” The clarinetist’s newest release is Bloom, the second album by her foursome Quartetinho (pronounced “quartet-CHIN-yo”).The band name is Portuguese for “little quartet,” although the players make a big, color-rich sound, each an ace on multiple instruments: Anat on various clarinets,Tal Mashiach on bass and guitar, Vitor Gonçalves on piano and accordion, and James Shippon on vibraphone and percussion. The members of Quartetinho have an extensive collaborative history together, as each musician is also part of the GRAMMY-nominated Anat Cohen Tentet. “There’s just four of us, but the band’s sound feels bigger, richer than that,” Anat says. “We can jump from a tango to a Brazilian song to swinging on a Monk tune to playing a Cuban 6/8. We can go to a lot of places with the repertoire, which is really satisfying—and fun.” Visit: https://theconrad.org/events/anat-cohen/ Anat Cohen on Instagram and Facebook
  • On Friday, October 25, Songwriter Sanctuary will take on a new rhythm with a special MC Edition featuring The Neighborhood Kids, The Brothers Burns, and Rob Deez. Typically known for its intimate acoustic sets and behind-the-song storytelling, the original music series is shifting gears to spotlight songwriters whose craft is rooted in hip hop, where rhythm, flow, and rhyme take center stage. Hosted by the iconic Jeff Berkley in collaboration with Normal Heights United, this event will bring a fresh spin to the Songwriter Sanctuary experience. The Neighborhood Kids are a conscious hip-hop collective on a mission to spark unity and drive social change. This group blends innovative rhythms with powerful messages. Their music dives deep into revolutionary topics and social activism, aiming to inspire and unite listeners through thought-provoking lyrics and a dynamic sound. With each track, The Neighborhood Kids challenge the status quo to create a more inclusive and conscious world. The Brothers Burns influences run the gamut of old school hip hop, funk, Motown, and R&B to classic rock, classical, electronic, and more. Drawing inspiration from everyday life experiences, prior/current events, social/economic happenings, and the abstract, the 2x San Diego Music Award winning trio provides an artistic and rhythmic commentary complete with lyricism, beatboxing, and live turntablism. Rob Deez is a San Diego-based acoustic hip hop comedian known for his witty humor, storytelling songs, and commanding stage presence. Mixing comedy with music, Deez creates relatable tracks about everything from ramen noodles to bike-riding, delivering laughter wherever he goes. Inspired by the likes of Wu-Tang Clan, Sublime, and early episodes of Saturday Night Live, he has carved out a distinct “singer-songrhymer” niche that keeps audiences laughing and connecting with every word. • Will Stucky and Lauren Leigh, who are accomplished and award-winning songwriters in their own right, teamed up to write and release their first song, Feel This Way, in December 2023. They have since been writing and harmonizing new songs about the nuanced ups and downs of life in a cheeky indie-folk fashion. They have made a splash in the local indie music scene since releasing their debut duo single last year. Opening the concert will be Aaron Bowen, an acoustic jazz/folk artist with a European flair—Django Reinhardt meets Paul Simon. A Southern California native and the son of four generations of musicians, Aaron has been a student of music and, in particular, a student of the guitar, from an early age. Touring extensively in Europe has gained Aaron a record contract with a Parisian label Seventh Crow Records.
