Third Sunday Craft is a monthly gathering of creative writers that fosters support, inspiration, and community. More than craft classes, Third Sunday Craft will help you construct and sustain a writing practice. New focus topics for each session will challenge writers to explore and expand their craft. Generative writing prompts will encourage you to grow and learn in exciting new ways. Sharing your work within a safe, supportive community will help you discover and strengthen your voice. Finally, with the goal of fostering supportive accountability, each session will conclude with a writer’s intentions for the month. Come check out Third Sunday Craft! Maybe in third grade your teacher said: “Tomorrow, children, we are going to write poems. Because everyone can be a poet.” Never does the teacher say, “Tomorrow, children we are going to write a novel.” (or a piece of creative non-fiction) So how do you become a poet? This workshop is designed to introduce you to the history of poetry today and provide a toolbox of techniques. The ultimate goal of the entire Certification process is to enable the writer to produce a publishable manuscript if so desired. In each workshop session, writing assignments or prompts will be provided as well as precise and qualitative feedback on the poems produced. Although not necessary, this workshop is designed to strongly encourage the generation of new work and the fine-tuning of previously written poems. Each participant will choose one book of poetry and one poetry craft book and submit, by week 5, a one to two page analysis of the book and its value, or not, to the individual’s poetry writing. Poem prompts will be given each week with the anticipation that the participants will generate new work. Participants are expected to actively participate in the read and critique portions of the workshop. In this class you will make a gorgeous, shaped belt bag perfect for your own adventures or gifting. The skills taught in this class include: how to sew darts; sewing a lined welt zip; bias binding; and bag hardware installation. This bag is highly customizable. You will go home with the pattern and ready to practice new bag making skills. An alternative to the webbing strap could be repurposing an old belt, or from a bag you no longer use. Thrift stores are full of interesting belts and hardware to harvest from bags! This class is appropriate for a sewer with knowledge of how to use a sewing machine and sewing basics. If you’re not sure if you’re ready for this class, email and ask any questions you might have beforehand. Located above the Flower Fields, ArtWalk Carlsbad is back for its 5th year, bringing fine art, live music, and interactive art experiences, offered free to attendees. The weekend-long festival focuses on fine art for sale by artists, who travel from all over the U.S. and Mexico to show and sell their work. In a venue overlooking the ocean, guests can explore different facets of art, while enjoying beautiful coastal views. The festival will display every medium of art, including painting, sculpture, glass work, fine jewelry, photography and more. More than 150 fine artists’ work will be featured, along with interactive art for families at KidsWalk, a full palette of musical performers, food trucks and stands, and more. The event will be fenced, even though admission is free. The fence allows attendees to enjoy beer and wine (to those 21-years and over), while strolling around the event, rather than having to remain in a Beer Garden. The Library's Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 6 to October 25. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. Our first performance of the series features the Camarada Tango Quartet, live before their second tour in Argentina. The mission of CAMARADA is to elevate and enrich the San Diego community and beyond by presenting phenomenal chamber music concerts, while engaging diverse audiences through visionary and educational programming, featuring living composers, commissioning new music, and igniting a powerful connection between the audience, artists and music. Camarada is dedicated to presenting invigorating performances of musical masterworks. Established in 1994, Camarada shares the joy of chamber music by pairing performers of the highest caliber with intimate spaces throughout San Diego. Original founders Beth Ross Buckley, Ann Chase, and Mary Barranger had a vision of concert experiences that are inviting and engaging for audiences. In 2008 Dana Burnett joined Beth Ross Buckley as Co-Artistic Director continuing this tradition. The series concludes Friday, September 27, with San Diego Music Hall of Fame inductee Fred Benedetti, Sandé Lollis, and Lisa Sanders and Brown Sugar. Benedetti studied classical guitar with Segovia and practices jazz, folk, rock, and flamenco styling. He is featured on over 200 records and numerous film and television soundtracks/ads. Singer-songwriter Lisa Sanders has a distinct country/bluesy/Americana sound; her genres include folk, pop, gospel, rock, and jazz. Sanders has garnered an extensive list of accolades as a recipient of San Diego Music Awards’ Best Acoustic Artist (two times), the San Diego Readers’ poll for Best Acoustic Artist, third-place for new folk in the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, The National Women's Association Living Legacy award, the National Association of Professional Women’s Legacy Award, and San Diego Music Hall of Fame inductee. These achievements have given her the opportunity to open and work with musical legends, including the Truckee Brothers, Lucinda Williams, Bonnie Raitt, Al Green, BB King, and Babyface. Sanders and Brown Sugar are a dynamic soulful, heartful singing duo with a gift for crafting wonderful songs and masterful storytelling. They have been together touring and recording as a duo for two decades, with Sanders singing lead and playing guitar, and Karen “Brown Sugar” Hayes, who is a nurse by day and a beautiful singing duo partner lending her gift of sweet harmonies to song by night. Sandé Lollis is an award-winning San Diego–based singer-songwriter known for her ability to weave captivating stories through her music. Drawing inspiration from personal experiences, conversations overheard in cafés, favorite books, and random thoughts, she crafts original melodies paired with introspective lyrics that explore the complexities of love, heartbreak, and life's twists and turns. Her voice and honest lyrics have struck a chord with listeners, with many praising her ability to connect on a deep emotional level. Lollis’s performance is soulful and wholly uplifting and earned her well-deserved San Diego Music Awards nominations for Best Country or Americana Album in 2022 and Best Country or Americana Artist in 2023.
