Oceanside Theatre Company’s Youth Academy returns this fall from September 3 to November 17 at the Brooks Theater for rehearsals for “The Addams Family.” Students ages 10-19 are invited to hone their acting, dancing and singing skills in this three-month musical theatre program. The Addams Family, a comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family, features an original story in which Gomez Addams is forced to keep the secret from his wife about his daughter Wednesday, the princess of darkness, dating a regular guy. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents. Lots of great parts … Come join the fun! Cost $150. Join us for an introspective death awareness experience that will take you through the last months of your life as you prepare for death and have to say goodbye to loved ones, possessions, personal goals and dreams, and daily activities that bring you joy. Our guided meditative experience walks you through the last months of your life where you'll need to prioritize what is truly important to you and then come face to face with saying goodbye to the people, places and things that bring meaning to your everyday life. Once you've said your final goodbye, our end-of-life doulas will tend to your body as our ancestors did by wrapping you in a burial shroud where you'll be able to contemplate the experience of death in a safe, protective cocoon. Pathways to Citizenship, a Solana Beach-based non profit serving qualified individuals seeking US citizenship, will host its annual Party with a Purpose fundraising fest on Sunday, Oct 13. The "sunset on the green" happy hour will feature steel drum band "Sounds of Paradise," tasty international cuisine, tropical beverages and the opportunity to win holiday packages, local entertainment, and one-of-a-kind art pieces by local artists. Support goes to pro-bono legal and educational services for Ukrainian and Afghan refugees and qualified immigrants from around the world while enjoying cool drinks, good food and sunset on the green. Join Point Loma Nazarene University for a reading by author Dr. Taylor Byas, Ph.D. hosted by the Department of Literature, Journalism, Writing, and Languages as part of the 2024 M.A. in Writing Visiting Writers Series. Dr. Taylor Byas, Ph.D. (she/her) is a Black Chicago native currently living in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she is a Features Editor for The Rumpus, a Poetry Acquisitions Editor for Variant Literature, an Editorial Board Member for Beloit Poetry Journal, and an Editorial Advisor for Jackleg Press. She is the author of two chapbooks, her debut full-length, I Done Clicked My Heels Three Times, from Soft Skull Press, which won the 2023 Maya Angelou Book Award and the 2023 Chicago Review of Books Award in Poetry, and Resting Bitch Face, forthcoming in Fall of 2025. She is also a co-editor of The Southern Poetry Anthology, Vol X: Alabama from Texas Review Press, and of Poemhood: Our Black Revival, a YA anthology on Black folklore from HarperCollins.
