The event will feature presentations of the Guild’s prestigious Odin Award to four local authors: Matt Coyle, author of the Rick Cahil crime novels; Jonathan Maberry, New York Times best-seller and five-time Bram Stoker Award-winning author; and SDSU professors emeriti Philip Pryde and Bob Riffenburgh for their contributions to science, literary fiction, and non-fiction. The Odin Awards are periodically presented by the Guild in recognition of local authors’ bodies of work. Instituted by Dr. Carl Nelson, past Guild President, Odin Awards have thus far been awarded to over 20 local authors, among them Chet Cunningham, Susan Vreeland, Steve Breen, T. Jefferson Parker, and Alan Russell. A complete list of previous Odin Award recipients is on our website. For four decades, the Guild has served as a San Diego organization dedicated to the advancement of writing and those who pursue it. The Guild has a current membership of over 200 published and aspiring authors. The Guild hosts monthly meetings featuring speakers of interest to the writing community. It also maintains an active website, publishes an annual anthology of members’ works, manages a Manuscript Critique Program, and presents workshops on a variety of writing topics. So here is "Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker" - a photography exhibit that invites conversations about supporting local small businesses. We're showcasing butchers from Valley Farm Market and The Meatery, bakers Hija del Maiz and Astra Bakehouse, and candlemakers 1502 Candles and Moo Lala! How do artisan business owners and their families thrive in San Diego (which Architectural Digest named America's "most expensive city")? Rebecca Smith and TJ Carter are the collaborators of this installation. Journey through the remarkable music of Kurt Weill with famous songs, such as “Alabama Song” and “Mack the Knife,” and the not so well-known yet equally brilliant. Featuring performances by mezzo-soprano Tzytle Steinman, mezzo-soprano Danielle Perrault, baritone Jonathan Nussman, and bass Walter DuMelle, with music directors Yewon Lee (piano) and Mark Danisovszky (accordion). In keeping with BTC’s mission to support other nonprofits in the San Diego area, all profits from the Kurt Weill Cabaret will benefit The Monarch School. Kurt Weill was a German-born American composer who was a proponent of writing music that served a socially useful purpose. With the rise of Hitler, he fled Berlin to Paris in 1933, then onto the United States. During his time on Broadway he produced several popular musicals before landing in Hollywood, writing numerous scores for movie musicals. He also wrote several works for the concert hall and the operatic stage. Apart from “Mack the Knife” and “Pirate Jenny” from The Threepenny Opera, some of his most famous songs include “Surabaya Johnny,” “Speak Low,” “Lost in the Stars,” “Lonely House,” and “September Song” all of which will be sung on the cabaret. Instructor Lydia Kardos teaches this introductory ceramic handbuilding course. This month-long series is full of hands-on, hand building techniques in clay. Students will create functional and nonfunctional ceramic art. They’ll learn how to create with coils, slab construction and clay pinching methods.
