The Theatre School @ North Coast Rep presents the heartbreaking romance, "Failure: A Love Story" as its next student production! By the end of 1928, all three Fail sisters will be dead — expiring in reverse order, youngest to oldest, from blunt object to the head, disappearance, and finally consumption. Tuneful songs, and a whimsical chorus follow the story of Nelly, Jenny June, and Gerty as they live out their lives above the family clock repair shop near the Chicago River, before their time unexpectedly runs out. A magical, musical fable where, in the end, the power of love is far greater than any individual’s successes or failures. Director Benjamin Cole is eager to share the talents of his student cast. “The show offers some unique challenges for creative staging with characters like Front Door, Moses the ball python, December and Mae the feral monk parakeets, and even Cuckoo Clock,” Cole reveals. “We’re exploring storytelling in a way not often seen in youth theatre,” he insists. Assistant Director Steve Smith adds, “This incredibly emotional script is both tragic and beautiful. It is a treat to work on with our students!” The show runs a sweet 90 minutes with no intermission and hopes to be the perfect date night for Valentine’s week. Join the Barona Band of Mission Indians in celebrating Native American heritage at the 52nd Annual Barona Powwow over Labor Day Weekend. This three-day cultural event kicks off on Friday, August 30 with gourd dancing at 6 p.m. and a dramatic grand entry of dancers in colorful regalia at 8 p.m. The Barona Powwow continues on Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Admission and parking are free. Hundreds of Native American participants of all ages and from across the country will highlight their dancing skills as they compete in a variety of categories, such as the Fancy Shawl Dance and Grass Dance, for more than $75,000 in prize money. In addition to beautiful regalia and dancing, spectators will enjoy Hand Drum contests, singing and music, popular Native American food including Indian fry bread tacos, arts and crafts, and handcrafted jewelry. Charlene is a German-American artist based in San Diego. She received her BA in Studio Arts from San Diego State University. Mosley’s current work discusses the importance of looking into one's self and allowing it to emerge in daily life. So often in a society that has certain standards and expectations, a lot of our true self is hidden or tamed to fit in, to appear a certain way or to belong. Her body of work is meant to inspire the viewer to live as courageously as a tiger, as resilient and freeing as a butterfly and to shed in renewal, like a snake. The wild animals reveal a unique connection to each person they are portrayed with. They embody attributes such as courage, strength, transformation, and reinvention, offering a sense of empowerment by their sheer presence. Mosley's work often depicts people of color surrounded by plants and beautiful stoic animals that harmoniously charge each other in vibrant color. With an interplay of expressive brushwork and texture Mosley evokes movement and excitement, capturing the viewer’s eye in a journey of discovery. Mosley has exhibited in both national and international exhibitions and won several awards. She also works as a freelance artist on a multitude of projects, including: murals, commissions and book illustrations; with a specialty in children’s books. In 2016, Mosley was one of the contributing artists of “Loving Vincent“, the 1st fully painted, Oscar-nominated feature film. This opportunity was the artist’s first time working in animation. Creating 250+ frames for the film, “was life-changing and a motivation to keep pursuing my passion as an independent artist”, notes Mosley. Mosley has travelled extensively to work on projects with national as well as international clientele. She is currently represented by Sparks Gallery in southern California.
