This textile art technique has been used in the making of rugs, homes (yurts) and clothing for centuries. In this class, the instructor will guide you, step by step, through the making of a felted flower. Starting with a soft merino wool, you will be creating your own one-of-a-kind flower choosing from a wide selection of dyed wool. After using soap and water to bind the fibers, you will take home a forever flower that will embellish any space. Your flower can be used as a bookmark, tied around a curtain or the strap of a purse, placed in a vase or given as a sweet gift…. The possibilities are endless! No experience necessary. Catherine and Robert Palmer Gallery presents What’s Your Type As the San Diego–Tijuana region is honored as the World Design Capital for 2024, the Athenaeum Art Center is thrilled to present What's Your Type?—an exhibition celebrating the area's rich design heritage and innovative spirit. From August 10 to October 25, 2024, immerse yourself in typographical creativity, featuring works from sign painters, muralists, block printers, and traditional letterpress and graphic designers. Engage with interactive installations and participate in printmaking activities that offer a hands-on experience with our extensive collection of historic type. Join the Barona Band of Mission Indians in celebrating Native American heritage at the 52nd Annual Barona Powwow over Labor Day Weekend. This three-day cultural event kicks off on Friday, August 30 with gourd dancing at 6 p.m. and a dramatic grand entry of dancers in colorful regalia at 8 p.m. The Barona Powwow continues on Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Admission and parking are free. Hundreds of Native American participants of all ages and from across the country will highlight their dancing skills as they compete in a variety of categories, such as the Fancy Shawl Dance and Grass Dance, for more than $75,000 in prize money. In addition to beautiful regalia and dancing, spectators will enjoy Hand Drum contests, singing and music, popular Native American food including Indian fry bread tacos, arts and crafts, and handcrafted jewelry. The Barona Powwow will be held at the Barona Sports Complex located on the Barona Indian Reservation just one mile north of the Barona Resort & Casino on Wildcat Canyon Road in Lakeside. "Have you always wanted to tap dance? In our Adult Tap Workshop, we will work on the fundamentals of tap dance in the feet and in the body. Each week, students will build on the skills learned the previous week as we broaden our step vocabulary. Students will also learn about major figures and influences in tap dance history. Students will hone their tap skills with an emphasis on musicality, technique, and playfulness as they learn a dance to showcase at the end of the course. Charlene is a German-American artist based in San Diego. She received her BA in Studio Arts from San Diego State University. Mosley’s current work discusses the importance of looking into one's self and allowing it to emerge in daily life. So often in a society that has certain standards and expectations, a lot of our true self is hidden or tamed to fit in, to appear a certain way or to belong. Her body of work is meant to inspire the viewer to live as courageously as a tiger, as resilient and freeing as a butterfly and to shed in renewal, like a snake. The wild animals reveal a unique connection to each person they are portrayed with. They embody attributes such as courage, strength, transformation, and reinvention, offering a sense of empowerment by their sheer presence. Mosley's work often depicts people of color surrounded by plants and beautiful stoic animals that harmoniously charge each other in vibrant color. With an interplay of expressive brushwork and texture Mosley evokes movement and excitement, capturing the viewer’s eye in a journey of discovery. Mosley has exhibited in both national and international exhibitions and won several awards. She also works as a freelance artist on a multitude of projects, including: murals, commissions and book illustrations; with a specialty in children’s books. In 2016, Mosley was one of the contributing artists of “Loving Vincent“, the 1st fully painted, Oscar-nominated feature film. This opportunity was the artist’s first time working in animation. Creating 250+ frames for the film, “was life-changing and a motivation to keep pursuing my passion as an independent artist”, notes Mosley. Mosley has travelled extensively to work on projects with national as well as international clientele. She is currently represented by Sparks Gallery in southern California. Moench, part of the writing room for Apple TV+'s "Severance," has a knack for writing powerful and relatable character-driven plays like the recent Moxie Theatre production of "Birds of North America." Much remains the same: the play, the stage manager, the green room — though Eddie finds himself in different costumes as he ages through the male roles over the course of his career.
