  • The course, led by Duke Windsor, will focus on a simple approach to foundation drawing and cover various projects, including working with geometric shapes, still life, and local sketching. Students will learn how to apply their newfound skills to school projects and create art pieces for shows and competitions. Drawing I will delve into line drawing, contour drawing, and the basics of portraiture, with all students completing finished works suitable for framing and exhibition by the end of the course. Participants in the workshop will have the opportunity to develop better observational skills, improve hand-eye coordination, work with short and long poses, experiment with mark-making using charcoal, explore lines, shapes, and values, and learn to draw in a loose and expressive manner.   • The series continues Tuesday, April 8, with the Great Wall String Quartet performing a program of Mendelssohn, Schulhoff, and Beethoven. Its members share a vision to connect with more immediacy to audiences and to give guidance to the next generation of chamber musicians. In his role at the Deutsches Symphony Orchester Berlin, violinist Wei Lu is one of the youngest concertmasters in a major orchestra. Violinist Qi Zhou is a member of the prestigious chamber orchestra Philharmonisches Kammerorchester Muenchen. Xu Wenbo is the current viola and chamber music instructor at the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra Academy in Hamburg. Hailed in New York Concert Review as “a superb cellist with intense and sensuous sound,” Yao Zhao performs with a dynamism that has secured him a successful career as the principal cello of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra.   • Theron Brown is bringing his eclectic alchemy of gospel, jazz, and soul to UC San Diego’s Park & Market on Saturday, August 17, at 7 p.m. A Professor of Practice in Jazz Piano at the University of Akron, Brown released his debut album “No Concepts” in 2019 and is currently working on his follow-up, “Spirit Fruit.” Whether as a performer, educator, or festival organizer, Brown views his music as a means to inspire people to live better lives. In addition to touring and teaching, Brown can be found performing regularly at jazz clubs around Northeast Ohio, where he also serves as the founder and artistic director of the Rubber City Jazz & Blues Festival.   • We’re stringing our bows for a spot of archery right here at the San Diego Archaeological Center! Shoot a few rounds and learn about how different cultures used bows and arrows. Shoot some rounds, make some new friends, and learn about how different cultures around the world crafted, hunted, and fought with bows and arrows. We'll be showcasing homemade traditional bows, arrows, quivers, and cordage, as well as demonstrating how to craft them out of natural materials. No previous experience required. Bring a friend! Please bring your own gear if possible. A limited amount of gear will be available to borrow – first come, first served.
