The series concludes Monday, May 12, with the New Orford String Quartet presenting works by Mozart, Dinuk Wijeratne, and Schubert (Death and the Maiden). Violinists Andrew Wan and Jonathan Crow, violist Sharon Wei, and cellist Brian Manke formed their ensemble with the goal of developing a new model for a touring string quartet: bringing four elite orchestral leaders and soloists together on a regular basis over many years to perform chamber music at the highest level. The Toronto Star has described this outcome as “nothing short of electrifying.” They have seen astonishing success, giving annual concerts for national CBC broadcast and receiving two Opus Awards for Concert of the Year and a 2017 JUNO Award for Best Classical Album. Recent seasons have featured return engagements in Chicago, Montreal, and Toronto, as well as their New York City debut on Lincoln Center’s Great Performers series. The 2nd Annual Pacific Rim Park Friendship Walk, hosted by the Ilan-Lael Foundation, is set to take place on November 19 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Shoreline Park on Shelter Island, celebrating cultural diversity, environmental conservation, and the Pacific Rim Park Project. This year's event takes on added significance as the foundation prepares for their participation in the World Design Capital 2024, focusing on the vibrant San Diego-Tijuana region as a cultural crossroads. Carlos de la Mora, CEO of the World Design Capital 2024, will be giving a short presentation at the end of the walk to discuss the year-long celebration of the San Diego and Tijuana region. Allakhverdyan was appointed Principal Clarinet of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2016. 2024 San Diego Music Award Winner for Best Jazz Artist ” From the moment Mercedes Moore takes the stage you can’t look away. She welcomes you to the show, thanks you for coming, and the band rips into its opening chords. As dancers rush to the floor, the smile on Mercedes’ face grows more radiant; you’re in her world and nothing else matters. You might think she was destined to do this, but you’d be wrong. Moore grew up doubting her skills, “I didn’t think that I could sing.” She says. “I didn’t think it was possible.” That was then, this is now. Today, fronting her own band, Mercedes works hard to be more than a voice. She wants fans to feel the music, the way she feels the music. Watching faces in the crowd on this night, as Mercedes swings through an extensive playlist of ballads, blues, and soul shakers, it’s obvious she has them right where she wants them. Yet, the most remarkable aspect of this story, the woman has only been singing professionally for a little more than eight years. Eight years. Let there be no doubt, Mercedes Moore is making the most of her time. As a three-time San Diego Music Award nominee, Moore performs regularly with some of Southern California’s premier musicians.
