ESSENCE OF WINTER Melissa Marquardt Solo Exhibition July 13 - 21 Opening Reception Saturday, July 13, 2-5 p.m. During her immersive Artist & Writers Residency at Chateau d’Orquevaux, France, in January 2024, Melissa explored the expressive possibilities of oil and cold wax medium to capture the profound beauty and tactile richness of the Champagne-Ardenne region. This collection is a representation of her deep connection with the nature, reflecting the textures and tonalities that resonate with the essence of northeastern France in the winter. Melissa delved into the interplay of earthy tones, drawing inspiration from the serene surroundings of the residency. The muted ochres, subtle greens, and warm browns became a palette which translated into the tranquility and harmony found in the French landscape and historic buildings. The cold wax medium, a transformative agent, allowed her to experiment with texture, depth, and nuance, capturing the subtle complexities present in nature. These works embody the essence of the environment that surrounded Melissa during this transformative period. Come chat with us at the next installment of the San Diego Automotive Museum Curator Talks Series, featuring Dr. Denise Sandoval, professor of Chicana/o Studies at CSU Northridge. Dr. Sandoval, a celebrated advocate for the lowriding community, with over 20 years of experience in researching and curating exhibits, will present "Lowrider Intersections" focusing on the rich, intertwined histories of the lowriding community, with her research and thesis work centered on the Black and Chicano lowriding experience. Her work has been instrumental in destigmatizing lowriding and highlighting its cultural significance. As artist Rubén Ortiz-Torres aptly wrote in 1998, “Style is a function of politics... Today lowrider cars combine and exacerbate old and modern Baroque sensibilities, transforming American cars into the sexualized moving altars of an American dream gone amok.” These rolling works of art encapsulate the intersectionality of Chicana/o culture, blending Mexican and American elements to form a complex tapestry of identity and history. Learn to wheel throw! Sit with Ariana, a full-time potter and experienced teacher who specializes in connecting beginners to this new craft in a manageable and peaceful way. This class will focus on techniques that are straightforward and effective, with the goal of getting students able to confidently create work of their own upon leaving the classroom.
