The Corner Frame Shop & Leucadia Art Gallery on 101 in Encinitas, is hosting a fundraiser with all proceeds going to the families/victims of the recent fire in Lahaina, Maui. The event will include a live art auction, raffle, hula dancers, live music and refreshments. The gallery is also collecting gift cards, which will be distributed directly to Maui fire victims. Faye Webster loves the feeling of a first take: writing a song, then heading to the studio with her band to track it live the very next day. When you listen to the Atlanta songwriter’s poised and plainspoken albums, you can hear why: she channels emotions that are so aching, they seem to be coming into existence at that very moment. At any given moment, Webster might be making country-tinged indie rock flecked simultaneously by pedal steel guitar and modern R&B production and songwriting techniques–a bespoke sound which has won her ardent fans and turned her into something of a stealth superstar beloved by everyone from southern hip-hop heads and alt-rock tastemakers. The title of Faye Webster's new album, Underdressed at the Symphony, is inspired by her occasional compulsion to lose herself amongst concertgoers at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Craving company and distraction but also leaning into the anonymity of a bustling crowd, Webster often bought a ticket to a performance at the last possible second. “Going to the symphony was almost like therapy for me,” she says. “I was quite literally underdressed at the symphony because I would just decide at the last moment that that's what I wanted to do. Tuesday, November 12, 2024 Please join us for an artist talk with Carlos Castro Arias. He will share a special presentation on his Athenaeum show, The Splinter in the Eye, and how it connects to his career and process. The reception will take at 6 p.m., followed by a lecture at 6:30 p.m. Carlos Castro Arias will be exhibiting his newest project, The Splinter in the Eye, an installation composed of paintings and objects in which the artist reflects about memory, trauma, and elements of the individual and collective identity. Carlos Castro Arias is a Colombian artist, professor, and musician. He received a BA from the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano, Bogota in 2002 and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 2008 to the San Francisco Art Institute, where he received an MFA in painting in 2010. Castro Arias has been an associate professor at San Diego State University since 2019. In 2022, the Museo Universitario Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia exhibited a retrospective of his work entitled La Vida de las Cosas Muertas (The Life of Dead Things). Most recently Castro Arias has exhibited at Artpace, San Antonio; Bread & Salt, San Diego; LA Galería, Bogota; Quint Gallery, La Jolla, and Espacio El Dorado, Bogota. He has participated in group shows in Sweden, Peru, France, Spain, New Zealand, Mexico and Venezuela. His musical projects include: POPO (2000), Los Claudios de Colombia (2005-2010) and Amor Negro (2020). The artist lives and works between San Diego, Tijuana, and Bogota. Craig Santos Perez is a Chamoru from the Pacific Island of Guåhan (Guam). He is a National Book Award winner and the editor of nine anthologies, including Indigenous Pacific Islander Eco-Literatures. He is also the author of Habitat Threshold and From Unincorporated Territory [åmot]. For the past twenty years, he has been involved in demilitarization, sovereignty, environmental justice, and climate change movements across the Pacific.
