Second Chance, an organization dedicated to disrupting the cycle of incarceration by helping at-risk youth and justice-involved people towards empowered self-sufficiency, will host their Legacy of Impact Gala on Thursday, June 27th, from 6:00-9:30 p.m. at the elegant Legacy Resort Hotel and Spa. This unforgettable evening promises music, delicious food, fun, and the opportunity to make a real difference in our community. Guests will enjoy live music by DJ Noel with a saxophone performance, savor hors d'oeuvres at the cocktail reception, and indulge in a gourmet dinner. The evening includes a silent auction and a fundraising program with impact awards, a live auction, and a paddle raise, all supporting the Second Chance Program and the local community. Each year, hundreds of justice-involved men, women, and youth come to Second Chance seeking positive pathways to meaningful change. This is done through education, encouragement, specialized training, and supportive services which address issues such as behavioral health, housing, transportation, and substance abuse. This year, we celebrate the success of Second Chance’s programs and participants, and the beautiful new fence around the Second Chance Youth Garden, featuring stunning panels designed and painted by our cohorts. These panels pay homage to the rich heritages of the Kumeyaay nation, Asian American, African American, and Hispanic/Latino cultures that have shaped Southeastern San Diego. Pricing begins at $250 for an individual ticket and includes free parking, a cocktail reception with passed hors d'oeuvres, participation in the silent and live auctions, the awards program, and a gourmet dinner. Most importantly, every dollar raised supports the impactful programs of Second Chance. Culinary Historians of San Diego will present “The Story of Spoons,” and Ken Albala, at 10:30 am June 15, in the Neil Morgan Auditorium at the San Diego Central Library, 330 Park Blvd. The Story of Spoons recounts the journey of food historian Ken Albala into the world of slojd carving, an entirely new area of food history and practical hands-on research. How and why both historic and contemporary spoons elide physically and aesthetically with pottery and recipes he also makes is the subject of his next book project Wooden Spoons, Clay Pots and Recipes from Scratch. Ken Albala is Tully Knoles Endowed Professor of History at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. He was the 2023 Distinguished Faculty Award recipient for the University and won the 2024 Hoefer award for Faculty-Student Collaboration for an article on the history of lasagna. His next book which will be out this fall is entitled Opulent Nosh: A Cookbook for Audacious Appetites. One of the most respected MCs in any language, Ana Tijoux has been winning over fans around the world since her debut 1977 bubbled up from an underground sensation into mainstream recognition after being featured on the hit TV show “Breaking Bad” and favorited by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. “South America’s answer to Lauryn Hill: equally skillful at singing and rapping,” (New York Times), Tijoux brings her new album Vengo on tour to the US—her first full US tour since 2018—which showcases the nimble MC over lush, golden-era hip-hop production rooted in traditional Latin instrumentation. Born in France to Chilean parents in political exile during Pinochet’s dictatorship, Tijoux moved back to Chile as a teenager and found a home in the emerging hip-hop scene of Santiago. In concert, Tijoux takes the stage with a full band that brings to life the intricate arrangements of the new album, a whirlwind trip through hip-hop, jazz, and funk, spiced with a bit of politics and her great sense of humor that has led audiences around the globe fall in love with her.
