Learn to shape wood! Looking to enhance your woodworking skills? Curious about using hand tools and shaping wood? In this one-day workshop, students will learn about the properties of wood and how different wood species need to be approached when sanding and finishing. We will cover shop safety and how to use various machines such as the bandsaw, spindle sander, edge sander, and drill press. The skills learned in this course will allow you to elevate your future projects by adding curves and texture. We will build upon machine knowledge and cover wood shaping using various hand tools such as rasps, files, spokeshaves, hand planes, chisels, and gouges. Whether you’re new to the woodshop or have extensive woodworking experience, we welcome you to join us for an afternoon of shaping wood! No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome. About Woodworking for Women & Non-Binary Woodworking for Women classes are designed to empower women & nonbinary individuals in a supportive and educational woodshop environment which is predominantly a masculine space. Tour the newly restored San Diego landmark. This unique wood lath greenhouse harbors over 2,000 subtropical plants from around the world—a concentration of botanical exotica in a one-of-a-kind structure that “leaves” photographers at a loss for words. This tour’s scheduling assumes the Botanical Building will have reopened following a two-year complete restoration project. If the building is still closed to the public, another topic will be presented. Forever Balboa Park offers thematic park tours that focus on the park’s unique biodiversity and highlight the park’s horticultural wonders on the second Saturday of each month. Led by park volunteer and horticultural enthusiast Bill Edwards, the free tours leave from the Visitors Center at 10 a.m. unless otherwise indicated. Walks last 1.5 to 2 hours and are typically less than 1 mile on level terrain. It is advised that potential attendees contact the Balboa Park Visitors Center prior to the scheduled walk to determine if there are any last-minute changes or cancellations to the tours.
