First Thursdays Epic Poetry is a monthly series where we gather live on Zoom to read, discuss, and make sense of some of the longest living epics that have influenced literature, popular culture, and how we think about the past. Together, we will explore Homer’s the Iliad and then the Odyssey, and finally, ending our 10-month series with Beowulf. The live Zoom classes are designed to give you confidence and support you as you read between our live gatherings. The thrill of going behind-the-scenes to view the artistic process is an opportunity very few people ever get. In the case of Dr. Seuss, we can no longer visit his studio or see his creative process in action. But, with the never seen in San Diego “the spark of an icon” FREE exhibit at Exclusive Collections Gallery (EC Gallery) now we can. May 17th through June 7th, these concept drawings transport us to the moment of creation and allow us to peer over his shoulder as they come to life. We can feel the spark of creation as we follow the curved and dippy lines and watch as they form the icons that have now become so familiar in our everyday lives. To kick off this special exhibit, the gallery will hold a VIP reception on Friday, May 17 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Ted Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) drew each page for every Dr. Seuss book published during his lifetime. What many people don’t realize is that for each final-line drawing, he would create multiple concept drawings leading up to the final published image. The works in this exhibition are a shining example that perfection is illusive, that perseverance in achieving one’s goals is a worthy pursuit, and that passion for one’s craft is more important than achieving the perfect outcome. Jeremy Denk is one of America’s foremost pianists, proclaimed by The New York Times as “a pianist you want to hear no matter what he performs.” He joins music director Rafael Payare and the San Diego Symphony at The Rady Shell for closing night of our 2023-24 season, performing Beethoven's sublime Piano Concerto No. 4 in a concert that also features Stravinsky’s complete ballet score to The Firebird. During our Chocolate Making Classes you will learn, create, eat and laugh! We offer chocolate making classes for adults and children 5 years and older*. Our hands-on chocolate making classes are about 1 ½- 2 hours long and limited to 10 students (or 10 child/ parent teams). There you will learn the basics of working with chocolate, create your own bark, molded chocolates and more. During class, students will play with favorite flavors like salted caramel and peanut butter cup and select monthly themed flavors made by chocolatier Michelle Lomelin. Students will also select from more than two dozen ingredients as they personalize a chocolate bark – with favorite flavors including freeze dried fruits and savory pretzels, potato chips and a wide selection of nuts. Plus, you will get to keep all your creations! Our chocolate making classes are offered one Saturday a month and each month has its own theme. AUGUST- “Paradise Bound!” This month we can work with the flavors of the islands! For molded chocolates we will have coconut cream ganache and passion fruit caramel.
