Come join us at the Hill Street Country Club Thursday, May 9 for a special evening in collaboration with local nonprofit Queer Surf, as we screen the inspiring documentary "Gaza Surf Club" (2016). This film, directed by Philip Gnadt and Mickey Yamine and produced by Little Bridge Pictures, debuted at the 2016 Toronto Film Festival after 5 years of collecting footage on the Mediterranean coast of Palestine. Witness the incredible story of surfers in Gaza who find personal freedom and joy amid enduring occupation and conflict. We will have food and drinks to purchase including offerings from a local Palestinian vendor. All proceeds from ticket sales will be distributed to organizations and mutual aid funds supporting families in Gaza. Guests are encouraged to donate as they are able. House Rules: Keep it Cute! After their 2018 Yellowstone performances catapulted them into the limelight, the band's three albums moved into the Top 10 iTunes country charts, and their most recent album at the time, "Mud," reached No. 1 on the charts, with their song "Stone" reaching No. 9 in all genres. Likely best known for their inclusion in the first season of the American neo-western, YELLOWSTONE, in 2018, Whiskey Myers was not only a part of the soundtrack, but the band also performed as a band in a bar in several of the episodes. The east Palestine,Texas-based rock and country group have refined their roots rock sound by morphing their inspiration taken from the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hank Williams Jr., Waylon Jennings and Nirvana to name just a few. In 1942, the United States incarcerated over 125,000 Japanese Americans in concentration camps during WW2—including 1150 from San Diego. AjA’s Civil Liberties Project aims to remember this history through art while drawing parallels to the injustices happening today. Come view this art exhibit at Ocean View Growing Grounds, commemorating the erased history of San Diego’s Japanese American communities and its ties to the current humanitarian crises happening locally and internationally. “The Garners” is a modern vintage duo/trio that embraces gypsy jazz, 1920’s and 30’s jazz, blues, and folk. They are writers of music as well, and you will find that the inspiration behind their originals comes from these classic eras/genres. Raggedly sophisticated, The Garner’s mysterious sweetness will entrance even the most immovable listener. With Lorelei on Tenor Ukulele, Jon on Gypsy Guitar, and both singing from the deep wells of our booming hearts, our music will transport you back when times were harder, yet the good times, more colorful, vibrant, and bold. She’s a little bit country, he’s a little bit rock ‘n’ roll… well, sort of. Lorelei, vocals and ukulele, is a classically trained vocalist that has fallen in love with swing jazz and Americana. Jon, vocals and guitar, is a certified jazz nerd having fallen in love with Billie Holiday, Lester Young, and Charlie Christian at the age of 16. He also has a soft spot for roots music, especially Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee. They decided to make it easier to split the check and got married in October, 2015. Their whole life is music. They gig, teach, compose, and record. They can be found performing their blend of swing classics, gypsy jazz, Americana, and originals all over Southern California.
