She welcomes you to the show, thanks you for coming, and the band rips into its opening chords. As dancers rush to the floor, the smile on Mercedes’ face grows more radiant; you’re in her world and nothing else matters. You might think she was destined to do this, but you’d be wrong. Moore grew up doubting her skills, “I didn’t think that I could sing.” She says. “I didn’t think it was possible.” That was then, this is now. Today, fronting her own band, Mercedes works hard to be more than a voice. She wants fans to feel the music, the way she feels the music. Watching faces in the crowd on this night, as Mercedes swings through an extensive playlist of ballads, blues, and soul shakers, it’s obvious she has them right where she wants them. Yet, the most remarkable aspect of this story, the woman has only been singing professionally for a little more than eight years. Eight years. Let there be no doubt, Mercedes Moore is making the most of her time. As a three-time San Diego Music Award nominee, Moore performs regularly with some of Southern California’s premier musicians. The list is endless–Taryn Donath, John Simons, Mark Campbell, Marc Ramos, Tracy Wiebeck, Kurt Kalker, Matt Taylor, Steve Wilcox, Scot Smart, Missy Andersen, Sharifah Muhammad, and Laura Chavez–to name but a few. When asked, Moore is straightforward about the multitude of players. “It just makes you a better singer.” She smiles. “And different people have different strengths. Plus, I want to learn, so I can be better.” It appears to be working. Mercedes Moore is currently juggling four major projects and her music can range from blues, gospel, and R&B and swing. The San Diego American Indian Health Center (SDAIHC) will host the 36th annual Balboa Park Pow Wow, a popular community event is free and open for all to join, learn, and celebrate. The Pow Wow is a celebration and showcase of Native American culture and traditions. Native singers, drummers, and dancers from throughout the Southwest will gather in Balboa Park to practice their traditions in their beautiful regalia. Pow Wow’s are a spiritual experience for American Indians and an opportunity to preserve and pass on the customs and traditions which keep our Native heritage alive. This year commemorates SDAIHC’s 45th anniversary as a pillar in the healthcare community. Since 1979, the center has served people from all walks of life through medical, dental and behavioral health services. This milestone sets forth on SDAIHC’s next chapter in delivering exceptional care for all and expanding services for those in need. Through its array of services, SDAIHC brings hope, resilience, and healing to the thousands that are served yearly, and continues to grow to provide high quality healthcare to all. Each day, the Pow Wow will showcase traditional activities such as Kumeyaay Bird Singing, Gourd Dancing, Inter-Tribal Dancing, and Honoring of community leaders. California President pro Tempore Toni Atkins will be presenting an award to the organization on Sunday. Sunday’s honoring will be dedicated to all the mom’s, grandmothers, adoptive, foster and any woman who has served in that capacity, in celebration of Mother's Day. SDAIHC promotes excellence in health care for people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. The center offers services with respect for custom and tradition to reduce the significant health disparities in San Diego’s under-served populations. "I hope we wake to a body we love" is a performance exhibition that ruminates on death, rebirth and belonging through the endurance practice, a practice of waiting. In a world already violent, Jun! offers a critical sustainable approach to difficult endurance performances that confront death by offering a space where death, pain, love, and intimacy can coexist simultaneously. In doing so, Jun! reframes endurance as a practice of waiting for a better future, a future where we can wake to a body that we love. Join Jun! at her performance on April 21st beginning 4 p.m., where she explores the concept of rebirth in the liminal space of a car. Although we will not technically leave the dock, we will be embarking on an imaginary voyage to relive the lives and times of the many emigrant passengers in the Great Age of Sail. Our Living History programs aboard the Star of India, which primarily serve elementary school classes, have proven to be so popular that we have adapted the format to suit the needs of families in order to let the public participate in this exciting experience. Our instructors will be in character and in costume, teaching various activities such as moving cargo and raising sails. Please keep in mind that the accommodations are also 19th century and can be likened to a camping trip. For example, you will be sleeping on the ‘tween decks (below the upper, open deck) in your sleeping bag, and while there are toilets there are no showers. Your voyage provides a truly rare opportunity to see the Star of India, as you never have before! Not only will you see areas of the ship that are closed to the public, but you will be able to actually get a taste of what life at sea might have been like in the 19th century.
