South Bay Earth Day returns to Bayfront Park! Update: Chula Vista’s South Bay Earth Day celebration now features a new, free, headline performance by genre-bending band Ozomatli! This celebration will feature a host of family-friendly activities, workshops, exhibits, vendors, art, food and drink, nonprofits, how-to and all-day entertainment featuring a nationally recognized, surprise headline recording artist. In addition to celebrating our precious, fragile planet and its bounty, South Bay Earth Day will engage and motivate visitors to choose environmentally friendly products and lifestyle choices, learn and practice, sustainable and mindful habits. Commencing at 2:30 p.m., the symposium kicks off with a compelling keynote address by Professor Nasrin Rahimieh from UC Irvine. Professor Rahimieh’s speech, Fictions of Self in Contemporary Iranian Women’s Writing, promises to offer intriguing insights into the literary landscape of Iran. Following the keynote, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a Q&A session. The symposium continues with a series of illuminating presentations by esteemed scholars. Domenico Ingenito (UCLA) will explore the intriguing relationship between mysticism and sexuality in the literary and critical works of Forugh Farrokhzad. Aria Fani (University of Washington) will present his recent publication, “Reading Across Borders: Afghans, Iranians, and Literary Nationalism,” which offers fresh perspectives on literary nationalism within the region. Additionally, World History and Cultures Librarian Farshad Sonboldel (UC San Diego Library) will examine the profound impact of religious poetic forms on the process of literary modernization in Iran. Throughout the event, discussions will be expertly moderated by Babak Rahimi (UC San Diego), ensuring a dynamic and thought-provoking exchange of ideas. Downtown’s The Whiskey House, which holds the Guinness World Record for Most Varieties of Whiskey, is hosting its February Whiskey Club Event on Tuesday, February 27 with Basil Hayden® of Clermont, Ky. Refresh your wardrobe with personalized creativity! In this workshop, you will design and sew your own quilt blocks and attach them to a pre-loved item of your choosing (we recommend you bring a tote bag or jacket*). You’ll leave with a one-of-a-kind item you’ll be proud to use or wear. Intuitive quilting is the process of creating a quilt (or quilt block) using your intuition and sense of creativity. You’ll select fabric scraps in shapes and colors that you’re drawn to without too much planning. We’ll move through the process without limits, allowing for creativity to flow freely. This course is for beginners and seasoned quilters alike. If you’ve never used a sewing machine before, you’ll be guided on how to sew simple straight lines, gentle curves and how to appliqué. If you’ve sewn apparel or quilts using patterns before, you’ll be encouraged to put away the “rules” and sometimes rigid guidelines of traditional quilting to tap into a more freeform and intuitive way of quilting. We will explore the alphabet and connect letters with basic calligraphy strokes. We will learn the rules of calligraphy and how to break them in order to create your own calligraphy style! It is highly recommended that participants create a Wikipedia account ahead of time. This month, we will be editing articles themed around Black history.
