The Athenaeum and Murals of La Jolla present Kelsey Brookes, with a special presentation of his career, process, recent projects, and 2014 mural One Pointed Attention for Murals of La Jolla. The reception begins at 6 p.m., followed by an artist talk at 6:30 p.m. Kelsey Brookes' mural, One Pointed Attention, engages the viewer in a mesmerizing vision scape. His distinctive use of color and line creates a portal into an intriguing and transcendent visual experience. The undulating patterns evoke a sense of calm contemplation while also creating a more cerebral and psychological effect. His work often embodies a metaphysical and otherworldly state. The scale of One Pointed Attention allows the viewer to feel absorbed into the pulsating aura Brookes has created. Kelsey Brookes’ unique painting practice combines color and pattern-making with a comprehensive knowledge of biochemistry. Brookes was born in 1978 in Denver, Colorado. He attended Colorado State University where he studied biochemistry and pursued life as a scientist. In 2005, he left the sciences to become a full-time artist. Brookes combines a strong understanding of science with painterly skill to create colorful, highly-detailed paintings that depict the molecular structure of drug compounds, molecules, and atoms to play with sensory perception. Often starting with a central focal point, his work radiates out through precise pattern and repetition spreading across the entirety of the canvas. Brookes has had solo exhibitions in La Jolla, Los Angeles, New York, Detroit, London, and Berlin. His work was featured as the cover art for the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 2012 “I’m With You” 7-inch records and The Flaming Lips’ 2013 “Stone Roses” LP. His work resides in many private collections, as well as the public permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Arkansas; and the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation, Los Angeles. Brookes lives and works in San Diego, California. Mural Members and Makers attend FREE and will receive an email to RSVP for the lecture. This talk will focus on amazing geological forces and events from the last 200 million years that have shaped the San Diego County we see today. From regional tectonics to massive volcanism, uplift and erosion, and the many current infrastructure challenges San Diego currently faces, Mike Thacker will tell the story behind our broad mesas, dramatic coastlines, canyons, and wide valleys. Attendees will be sure to come away with a deepened understanding of and appreciation for the geological history of our unique region. About the Presenter: Mike Thacker is a retired Senior Staff Research and Development Scientist at Thermo Fisher Scientific. He has a B.S. in zoology from San Diego State University and studied anthropology and archaeology at University of California Santa Barbara, Palomar College, and San Diego State University. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees for the San Diego Archaeological Center since 2018 and is a volunteer teaching assistant for Palomar College archaeological excavation field school and survey programs. Mike is passionate about his home of San Diego and leads interpretive hikes for the San Dieguito River Park and San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy. His interest in geology has motivated his study of the geology of the San Diego region for the last 14 years. Each session begins with gentle seated movements designed to open up your energy and create a harmonious space. We’ll then transition into a soothing sound bowl meditation to center ourselves. The session will conclude with a circle share, allowing participants to connect and support one another through open-hearted conversation. This foundational class sets the tone for a nurturing and supportive series. 9/24 Birth Story Circles In this session, we create a sacred space for sharing and reflecting on our birth stories. Through guided discussion, we'll explore the powerful experiences of bringing new life into the world. Sharing these stories can be both healing and empowering, offering insight and connection with fellow mamas who have walked similar paths. This circle is a chance to celebrate, process, and find solace in our collective experiences. 10/1 Mental Health and Motherhood Navigating the journey of motherhood can bring a range of emotions and challenges. This session focuses on mental health and well-being, providing tools and support to manage stress, anxiety, and postpartum feelings. We’ll discuss strategies for self-care, mindfulness practices, and resources for emotional support, helping you to thrive both mentally and emotionally as a mama. 10/8 Pelvic Floor Recovery Flow This class is dedicated to understanding and nurturing your pelvic floor health post-birth. We’ll guide you through a gentle flow that focuses on strengthening and rehabilitating your pelvic floor, with an emphasis on comfort and safety. Learn effective exercises and techniques to support your body’s recovery and enhance overall well-being. 10/15 Breastfeeding, Bottle Feeding, Weaning & Solids Explore the essentials of feeding your little one in this informative session. We’ll cover topics ranging from breastfeeding and bottle feeding to weaning and introducing solids. This class provides practical advice, tips, and community support to help you navigate the evolving feeding journey with confidence and ease. 10/22 Expressive Art and Closing Circle In our final session, we embrace creativity and expression through art. This workshop encourages you to explore your emotions and experiences through collaging and vision board creation. We’ll conclude the series with a closing circle, where we reflect on our shared journey, celebrate our growth, and reinforce the bonds formed within the Mama Village. Sessions will be interactive, encouraging open dialogue and the sharing of personal experiences. We believe in the power of connection, and through our sessions, we aim to foster an inclusive and non-judgmental atmosphere where all moms can feel supported and understood. In addition to the sessions, we will provide valuable resources, including handouts, recommended readings, and access to an online forum where you can continue connecting with fellow moms beyond the program's duration.
