  • The seven-season show about a Baltimore police homicide unit didn’t feature gun battles and car chases. The tone, pacing and camera work were all groundbreaking when the show started in 1993.
  • This is an in-store event with author Cory Doctorow. The event will consist of a 30 minute discussion, followed by a Q&A with the audience, and finally a book signing. Cory Doctorow is a science fiction author, activist and journalist. He is the author of many books, most recently The Lost Cause, a solarpunk science fiction novel of hope amidst the climate emergency. His most recent nonfiction book is The Internet Con: How To Seize the Means of Computation, a Big Tech disassembly manual. Other recent books include Red Team Blues, a science fiction crime thriller; Chokepoint Capitalism, nonfiction about monopoly and creative labor markets; the Little Brother series for young adults; In Real Life, a graphic novel; and the picture book Poesy the Monster Slayer. In 2020, he was inducted into the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. Purchasing a copy of The Bezzle through Mysterious Galaxy will get you a numbered ticket for the signing line after the event. Only those who have purchased one of Cory's books through Mysterious Galaxy will receive a numbered ticket for the signing line. Those who have not purchased a book through us are still welcome to get their books signed, but will have to wait until after the numbered line has finished. New York Times bestseller Cory Doctorow's The Bezzle is a high stakes thriller where the lives of the hundreds of thousands of inmates in California’s prisons are traded like stock shares. The year is 2006. Martin Hench is at the top of his game as a self-employed forensic accountant, a veteran of the long guerrilla war between people who want to hide money, and people who want to find it. He spends his downtime on Catalina Island, where scenic, imported bison wander the bluffs and frozen, reheated fast food burgers cost 25$. Wait, what? When Marty disrupts a seemingly innocuous scheme during a vacation on Catalina Island, he has no idea he’s kicked off a chain of events that will overtake the next decade of his life. Martin has made his most dangerous mistake yet: trespassed into the playgrounds of the ultra-wealthy and spoiled their fun. To them, money is a tool, a game, and a way to keep score, and they’ve found their newest mark—California’s Department of Corrections. Secure in the knowledge that they’re living behind far too many firewalls of shell companies and investors ever to be identified, they are interested not in the lives they ruin, but only in how much money they can extract from the government and the hundreds of thousands of prisoners they have at their mercy. A seething rebuke of the privatized prison system that delves deeply into the arcane and baroque financial chicanery involved in the 2008 financial crash, The Bezzle is a sizzling follow-up to Red Team Blues. • Fellow Pynins is an Ashland, Oregon based award-winning contemporary folk duo with a keen and bucolic sense of vocal harmony and song craft anchored in the balladry tradition. The duo consists of Dani Aubert on claw-hammer banjo and bouzouki, and Ian George on guitar and mandolin. They are songwriters, collectors, and interpreters. Since 2016, the duo has toured the United States incessantly and has gathered significant traction in the United Kingdom and Ireland, gracing festivals such as Cambridge Folk Festival, Wilderness Festival, Omagh Bluegrass Festival, and selling out legs of their most recent United Kingdom and Ireland tour. In 2019, they were named by NPR’s Bob Boilen as one of the best Tiny Desk submissions. The same year they won the Minnesota Bluegrass and Old-Time duet competition. In 2020/2021 the duo relocated from Minneapolis back to Oregon to build (learning every step of the way) two tiny houses on wheels for their family, which they now live in. In 2022, Fellow Pynins released their sophomore album Lady Mondegreen while officially showcasing at the 2022 Folk Alliance International Conference in Kansas City. Lady Mondegreen, recorded live over ten days in December 2021, at their off-grid tiny house dwelling in the mountains of Oregon, is an ode to their love and reverence for traditional music. All songs on the album were learned person-to-person from various individuals they met while traveling with their two children, over a ten-month song collecting trip through Europe, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, in their transformed camper van “Big Blue.” The album showcases their “strong vocal harmonies” (Smithsonian Folkways), instrumental prowess, and adventurous arrangements quintessential to the Fellow Pynins rustic sound. The duo’s sophomore album is being received with remarkably positive reviews. Songlines states “Lady Mondegreen is an exquisitely harmonized treasure trove of imaginatively reinterpreted, historically significant acoustic music” while Paul McGee, of Lonesome Highway, called it one of the best folk albums of the year. “Fellow Pynins will transport you into their haunting and beguiling world of love tales and spine-tingling harmonies… They’ll have you traveling far and wide to hear them again.” – Lisa Dunn (BBC) For more information visit: sdfolkheritage.org Stay Connected on Facebook and Instagram
