On View: April 2 through May 3 Humanities Center Gallery, Saints Tekakwitha and Serra Hall Joan Perlman is a multi-disciplinary artist who has exhibited widely and received numerous awards and fellowships for her work inspired by the volcanic landscape of Iceland. Her videos, paintings, and drawings consider the raw, convulsive beauty of this place while drawing attention to the perils of accompanying glacial melt. As the artist herself has noted, “The experience of observing nature over an extended period of time in this subpolar region of the earth reveals the troubling presence of climate change, which includes receding glaciers and warming temperature trends.” Perlman’s work both documents and resists the morphing terrains that compel her. Recent videos such as "Dispersion" (2015), "Break" (2014) and "What Remains" (2011), combine spectacular footage of moving ice and water with original soundtracks made in collaboration with a range of composers. As part of the ongoing Screenings series, the Humanities Center will debut Perlman’s most recent video project, "Sweep" (2024), for San Diego audiences. Sparks Gallery is pleased to show new work by bi-coastal artist Monty Montgomery in his solo exhibition, “Intersection”. Profoundly affected by his upbringing in the rural woods of Virginia’s countryside, Monty Montgomery’s work has always been informed by his visceral and emotional reactions to everyday experiences, such as exploring nature, or trekking city streets. His distinctive artistic voice was shaped in his teen years, when he began expressing his perception of the external world in bright geometric abstraction. His characteristic style emerged as a result of distilling sensory input through the lens of urban and natural landscapes. Using color theory, mathematics, and intuition, he attempts to harmonize the collision of these elements into something beautiful and cohesive. Montgomery uses his innate intuition for color and object relationships to connect with the viewer, sharing his artistic vision through a “visual-emotional language”, as he calls it. His interpretation of everyday scenes is often surprising, as the end results look vastly different than their real world counterparts. “The Pleasure of Your Company” music series welcomes back celebrated pianist Dmitry Kirichenko on Sunday, February 11, at 2:30 p.m. at the Scripps Miramar Ranch Library Center. His playing, described by Paris music critic Claude Taelman as “warm sensitivity heightened by his delicate touch and great technical mastery,” is a perfect match for the Library’s fine Schimmel piano. The program will include works by Debussy, Mozart, Schubert, and Chopin. A graduate of the Moscow and Odessa Conservatories, Dr. Kirichenko has performed throughout the United States and Europe. There is no charge for the concert, which is sponsored by the Scripps Ranch Friends of the Library, although donations are appreciated. Masks are recommended but not required at this time. Scripps Miramar Ranch Library Center is located at 10301 Scripps Lake Drive. It should be noted that due to a parking lot expansion project, onsite parking is currently somewhat limited. Chinese culture features a rich and eclectic wealth of stories. From legends and fairy tales to narratives steeped in history. From dragons (for this is the Year of the Dragon) to stories of love and luck to fish and fishing traditions that brought many to San Diego. January 27th, storytellers Jim Dieckmann, Aunt Li-Anne, and Mindy Donner will share tales at the museum to bring in the "Year of the Dragon." Join professional storytellers from the Storytellers of San Diego for an hour of engaging tales. Each program features different tellers and different stories. Come to one, two, or all three. Other Shows February 17th, "Love, Luck and Good Fortune" tales will be told by Fred Laskowski, David Schmidt, and Patti Christensen. March 3rd, " Tales of Fish and Fish" will be told by Marilyn McPhie, Lissette Ryan and Emily Stamets. Appropriate for all ages.
