  • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Amnesty International Group 471 Hosts Public Event Honoring World Press Freedom Day Carlsbad, CA — In recognition of World Press Freedom Day, Amnesty International San Diego North County Group 471 will host a free public event on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Carlsbad. The event will spotlight the growing threats faced by journalists around the world and highlight the vital role of a free press in defending human rights and freedom of speech. The evening will feature a screening of the acclaimed Frontline documentary "Putin vs. the Press", followed by an interactive advocacy session where attendees will have the opportunity to take action on behalf of journalists facing persecution, imprisonment, and violence for doing their jobs. “In an era of disinformation, censorship, and rising authoritarianism, journalists, reporters, writers, and bloggers are increasingly targeted for exposing the truth,” said a spokesperson for Group 471. “This event is a chance to raise awareness and stand in solidarity with those who risk their lives to keep the public informed.” The event is open to all and aims to engage the community in defending press freedom and the individuals who uphold it around the globe. Local Roots offers a selection of locally crafted brews on tap and wine by the glass. Don’t forget to check out their food menu as well!! They are a family-friendly tap house with plenty of room for pets as well!! We will hold events outside in their private canopy space. Plenty of parking is available as well! We encourage artistic freedom! You can alter the painting to fit your style and use any of our colors. Things to know: We require a 48-hour notice for cancellations/rescheduling.   • Saturday, January 11, 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Learn to make a basket made from long leaf pine needles, using waxed Irish linen, an assortment of beads or other embellishments, starting with a stone center. Topics to be covered include the differences between pine needle types, preparing the needles, waxed Irish linen, basket centers, embellishing your basket, and how to start and how to finish your basket. Students have the option to weave a basket, a pendant, or an ornament. Basket Weaving is a wonderful way to recycle from nature and is also a meditative activity. No experience necessary.
