Once again, the Dutch community in San Diego County takes on the orange to celebrate King’s Day, a Dutch national heritage, celebrating the Dutch King’s birthday. Each year, Dutch and Indo Dutch people in the Netherlands and abroad commemorate the birthday of King Willem Alexander with a full day of music, food, and fun. No wooden shoes required, but visitors are welcome to take on the orange. This year San Dieguito Park will turn orange for this family event. This exhibit features the work of two MiraCosta College Art Faculty: Ryan Gray and Dean Ramos. Gray's work is often an attempt to shed light on the devastation that nuclear and chemical contamination has on our bodies and environments. Ramos uses a variety of materials to create artworks that range from abstract explorations of materials and forms to depictions of the body that investigate psychological and emotional states. Redesigned for 2023 with a new 1920s jazz soundtrack, the grove of towering Norfolk Island Pines on the Founders Lawn is the scene of a dynamic light show orchestrated to music, a brilliant ethereal experience that captivates guests with a finale of snow flurries. Showcased is the Norfolk Pine originally made famous in 1904 as the world’s first electrically lit outdoor Christmas tree. This year's show also has more lights, more snow, and a brand-new bar and lounge for taking in the dazzling experience. A 12-foot-tall replica of the hotel’s signature red turret complete with holiday lights serves as the focal point of the new bar, which will be surrounded by Victorian-inspired lounge seating with bottle service for the perfect spot to watch the show.
