BIG country music sensation, Little Big Town, with their four-part vocal harmonies and singalong-friendly hits — and multi-award nominees and winners — grace the Corona Grandstand Stage at the 2024 Toyota Summer Concert Series at the San Diego County Fair. Alabama-based Country vocal group, known best for their hits,“Pontoon,” “Boondocks,” “Day Drinking,” and “Girl Crush,” began their nearly 30-year career back when singers Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman sang together at Samford University. Joined later by Phillip Sweet, and Jimi Westbrook, they have crafted their signature sound both as a group and in collaborations with other popular country groups/singers. A big Fair welcome to 50s, 60s and 70s music legend, Smokey Robinson as he croons his way onto the Corona Grandstand Stage as part of the San Diego County Fair's Toyota Summer Concert Series. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and DOUBLE Hollywood Walk of Fame member, Robinson started his career as The Miracles front man and rose up through the music industry ranks to the Hall of Famer he is today. Multi-talented Smokey Robinson is an R&B and soul singer, songwriter, record producer and former Motown record executive who started his illustrious career dating back to the mid-50s. As the founder and frontman for the group The Miracles, becoming Smokey Robinson & The Miracles in 1965, Robinson was the chief songwriter and producer of their 22 albums and smash top ten hits such as, "You've Really Got a Hold on Me,” "Mickey's Monkey,” "I Second That Emotion,” "Baby Baby Don't Cry" and the group's only number-one hit during their Robinson years, "The Tears of a Clown.” In 1972 he focused his full attention to helping run Motown Records, retiring in 1988. Based out of sunny San Diego, Gypsy Sally is a three piece blues band that brings the old school feel to the new age from blues, to rock with the occasional Bossa and Latin twist. Front man Kyler Jakubowski has utilized his North Carolina roots and over the years has created a very unique blues sound not heard since the 50’s, Austin Wagner links the rhythm and melody with his smooth motown influenced James Jameson style, and Martin Quezada holds the beat on drums with his Caribbean swing, all of which when brought together creates what is now known as the one and only Gypsy Sally. To date, Gypsy Sally has recorded one album, "How Long," recorded live in the studio with Alan Sanderson. Gypsy Sally is named after a bar in the song "Tecumseh Valley" by Townes Van Zandt. Apart from Van Zandt, the band is influenced by classic blues artists like B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, and Peter Green. However, in addition to the blues, the band also draws influence from the vocals of Sam Cooke, and the rock guitar of Rory Gallagher. “Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disparities among Black, White, and Filipino Women: What's fat got to do with it?” Maria Rosario (Happy) G. Araneta PhD, MPH, is Associate Dean of Diversity and Community Partnerships and Professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Family Medicine. Her research interests include maternal and pediatric HIV/AIDS, birth defects, life course exposures, social determinants of health, and health disparities. She received her BA in Biology from UCSD and her MPH and PhD in Epidemiology from Yale University She is the co-Principal Investigator of the Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes Study (DPPOS) where UC San Diego is one of 25 participating sites. This longitudinal study, with over 20 years of follow-up, aims to identify the risk factors, mechanisms, and neuropathology of cognitive impairment in persons with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes, during the current funding cycle. Dr. Araneta is the PI of the UCSD Filipino Health Study, a longitudinal study of myriad health outcomes among Filipino men and women, co-investigator of the Rancho Bernardo Study, where she leads research on health disparities in osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease among elder White, Filipino and Black women (Health Assessment Study of African-American Women). She served as a perinatal epidemiologist for the UC San Diego Mother, Child and Adolescent HIV Program, was a co-investigator on maternal and perinatal HIV studies in Mexico, and co-investigator to assess health advantages and disparities in reproductive outcomes by race/ethnicity and nativity. Her prior research included studies on birth defects and adverse reproductive outcomes among Gulf War veterans, HIV transmission through donor artificial insemination, mother-to-child HIV/AIDS transmission, and behavioral intervention studies, including restorative yoga, active stretch and Zumba Fitness to reduce components of the metabolic syndrome.
