American Mother takes us deep into the story of Diane Foley, whose son Jim, a freelance journalist, was held captive by ISIS before being beheaded in the Syrian desert-the video shared online for all the world to see. In American Mother; Diane’s voice is channeled into searing reality by National Book Award winning author Colum McCann, who brings us on a journey of strength, resilience, and radical empathy. McCann will be in conversation with Avi Spiegel, PhD, JD, associate professor of political science and international relations. Colum McCann has received some of the world's most prestigious literary awards and honors, including the U.S National Book Award, the International Dublin Literary Prize, a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres from the French government, election to the Irish arts academy, several European awards, the 2010 Best Foreign Novel Award in China, and an Oscar nomination. His novels TransAtlantic (2013) and Apeirogon (2020) were longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. In 2017 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts. Sarah Stieber presents the 4th annual Sarah Stieber Gallery in Little Italy, unveiling her latest collection titled the "Integration Series." The experiential pop-up gallery will be open to the public from April 8 – June 17, with a grand opening celebration taking place on April 18. The figurative series explores multifaceted identities, illustrated by the illusion of overlapping transparent colors made entirely from cut and pasted tape. Known for integrating her art with the public through large-scale murals and immersive events, this year’s gallery concept is no exception. When visitors enter the gallery, they will feel like they are stepping into one of Stieber’s colorful, sparkling paintings and can engage with a host of experiential features. Visitors can step into a custom Polaroid photo ‘art booth’ adorned with colored transparencies to snap Polaroids of themselves, creating instant self-portraits in Stieber’s signature style and becoming part of the art themselves. In a special collaboration with Topo Chico Mineral Water, the brand will introduce "Sabores," their newest line of flavored sparkling waters, at the gallery in weekly "Sabores Saturdays" events. This public event series will feature live music, allowing visitors to sample the new flavors in a festive atmosphere. Miracle Babies, a nonprofit organization whose mission is dedicated to helping perinatal mothers and their families during their time of need by providing transportation, mental health assistance and supportive services, will be hosting its next diaper distribution on Saturday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Jack in the Box Corporate Office in Kearney Mesa (9357 Spectrum Center Blvd., San Diego, 92123). Registered guests will be able to attend the free diaper distribution from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and then it will open to the public from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Over 350 local families are anticipated to attend. Registration is open through Friday March 8 at 12 p.m. or until supplies last. Since the creation of their diaper distributions in 2020, Miracle Babies has supplied over 1.5 million diapers to over 15,000 families in need. To ease the burden of financial stress, diaper drives are for all families, not just families with babies in the NICU. The American Medical Response (AMR) will also provide free car seat safety inspections on a limited basis. Families in need of products should register online at the Miracles Babies website to ensure availability of diaper sizes. Diaper donations and volunteers are welcome and accepted at all distributions.
