  • This is an all ages event at Quartyard - San Diego. The Strike is a three-member band based in Los Angeles, CA including frontman Chris Crabb, Jay Tibbitts (drums), and David Maemone (keys/guitar). The Strike released their debut album "Faint of Heart" in June of 2017, which was met with great enthusiasm nationally. The success of the record allowed them to expand their presence into Los Angeles from the greater Mountain West region where the band started. In 2022 the band signed with Nettwerk Music Group and released their follow-up album “The Lost Years,” which helped them garner national attention and begin touring. The Strike will be releasing their third studio album in the Fall of 2024. The album was recorded with acclaimed producer John Fields (Switchfoot, Ben Rector, Corey Wong). The Strike is known for their captivating live performances. In an age of musical minimalism, The Strike is reminiscent of rock bands from the 70's and 80's. They feature true showmanship in an age where the art of performance has been forgotten. Chris Crabb's vocal style is akin to rock vocalists such as John Waite, or Steve Perry. The band members are all students at their craft. Those who attend Strike shows become instant fans. Visit: https://dice.fm/event/2wdvqp-the-strike-26th-jun-quartyard-san-diego-tickets? • Spacehog were formed by natives of Leeds, England in the spring of 1994 in New York City. Guitarist Antony Langdon met drummer Jonny Cragg at a cafe in the East Village where Cragg worked killing rats in the basement. The pair agreed to make music and Langdon persuaded his younger brother Royston to move to the States to sing and play bass. The current lineup was finally completed Craggs’ friend Richard Steel who moved to New York to fill out an all Yorkshire lineup. The band quickly generated a following and record company interest with their epic live shows and sharp, irreverent and mesmerizing song craft. They signed with Sire Records in the Spring of 1995. Spacehog, with producer Bryce Goggin recorded their platinum debut ‘Resident Alien’ at Bearsville Studios later that year, scoring a mega-hit single with ‘In The Meantime’ in early 1996. The band’s follow up; "The Chinese Album", was released in 1998, taking a more thoughtful and conceptual approach, it consolidated their appeal In Europe and South America, and tours with The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Aerosmith and The Sex Pistols. The advent of the new millennium saw more touring with REM and Oasis and a third album; The Hogyssey, recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis with producer Paul Ebersold. Spacehog were largely inactive from 2001 until July 2006 when they reformed to play Craggs’ birthday party. The party served as a catalyst for recording their fourth studio LP; ‘As It Is on Earth’ again with Goggin and released in 2013. In 2024 the band contributed to the Grammy nominated soundtrack to ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy 3’. And now after this long ride the band has decided to saddle up once again…. British dance-rock quintet EMF formed in Cinderford, England in October 1989. All five original members were veterans of the local music scene before founding EMF, whose name supposedly stood for “Epsom Mad Funkers" (although it was widely speculated that the initials instead represented "Ecstasy Mother Fuckers"). Within two months of formation, the group played its first gig; after unearthing a Casio sampler and sequencer in a local thrift shop, a light techno element was added to their rock-oriented sound. Their debut album, "SCHUBERT DIP," was released in May 1991. It was certified platinum (over a million copies sold) in the US in September 1991. It had reached a peak chart position of #3 in the UK and #12 in the US, as well as finishing the year at #57 overall. By the end of 1991, their infectious debut single “Unbelievable” had conquered the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 in the UK. The single was certified gold (over 500,000 copies sold) in the US in May 1991. The song was in such heavy rotation for most of the year in America, that it finished as the #6 single overall for the year. • To know the vulnerable and candid songs of honestav is to know Av Freeman: a determined, kindred soul who, in the face of unimaginable odds and loss, found himself a breakout hit with 2024’s “I’d Rather Overdose” and a ticket out of rural Missouri. Growing up the youngest of four brothers and a sister, he caught the music bug early: “They all wanted to be rockstars,” Av says. “I was a little kid going and watching my sixteen-year-old brother play screamo shows in bowling alleys and pizza joints. I was hooked. I wanted it bad.” He split his time between his parents, spending half the month with his mother and half with his dad. “My mom was the worst tweaker ever,” he explains. “She lived in the hood and got arrested multiple times selling meth.” Life with his father was relatively stable, but still not comfortable. “There was no A.C. and no food,” Av says, “but I was going to school and playing sports. Half the month, I was the quarterback, and the other half, I was running around with no socks, smoking cigarettes with the worst kids.” From the start, Av’s music was a response to tragedy; at age fifteen, Av found his brother dead from suicide. Amid this grief, Av adopted a tough-guy rap persona. He recorded music obsessively, releasing a song a week for over a hundred weeks in a row. “Literally for two years,” he says. “Sometimes I’d drop even more. I’d record four songs in a night and post two of them.” These years of experimentation reveal themselves in Av’s blend of folk and hip-hop, which sees scratchy verses layered over sensitive acoustic guitars. With a proven track record of chart success, including “I’d Rather Overdose” reaching multiple Billboard charts and its remix achieving significant radio airplay success, sold-out performances, and a rapidly expanding fanbase, honestav is poised to make a significant impact on the alternative music landscape. His authentic voice and unwavering dedication continue to inspire and connect with listeners around the world. • By the time Avi Kaplan launched his solo career with 2017's "Sage and Stone", he'd already built an audience that stretched across the globe, racking up three GRAMMY Awards as a member of the platinum-selling vocal group, Pentatonix. As the group's profile continued to climb though, Avi knew he needed to return to his own artistic foundation — to the organic roots, country and soul music that had provided the soundtrack to his upbringing in rural California. Now, following 2020’s well-received EP, "I’ll Get By" and 2022’s highly acclaimed LP, "Floating On A Dream" (produced by Shooter Jennings), Avi is set to release "Feel Alright", a new 5-track EP on Fantasy Records that further showcases his extraordinary artistic ability. Produced by Kaplan along with Reid Leslie (Devon Gilfillian), "Feel Alright" blends modern sounds with classic influences into something inventive, fresh and wholly original. The new music is the start of a busy 2024 for the celebrated singer-songwriter. Between mid-May and mid-June, Avi will visit 16 cities on a tour across the U.S., with confirmed dates in the UK and Europe set for September. Guthrie Brown, a Nashville transplant by way of "old Montana" began playing the guitar at age six. By the age of seventeen, he journeyed to Nashville to pursue the dream of being a professional songwriter, recording & performing artist. After settling in Music City, he recorded and produced his first self-titled EP, which got the attention of Nashville's premiere independent radio station, WRLT Lightning 100. Capitalizing on the initial success of his debut EP, Guthrie recorded and released his second EP "Spirit of the Elk" with producer Stuart Mathis (The Wallflowers, Lucinda Williams). Following his second release, he recruited his longtime friends and musicians John Ogelby (drums), Will Honaker (bass, keys) and John McNally (guitar) to join the band. Their musical pairing has since been compared to something as strong and pure as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. • Discover how a 3D modeling project at San Diego State University is bringing a historic collection of Mesoamerican masks into the digital age. This lecture will explore how these digital models are enhancing teaching and public interpretation while tracing the deep history of masks as ritual, funerary, and ceremonial objects in ancient societies like Teotihuacan. The presentation will also examine how these traditions endure today in community practices such as danzas, offering a look at the ongoing cultural significance of masks across centuries of change. Meet your lecturers: Keith Chan is a local anthropology instructor at Grossmont College, MiraCosta College, and San Diego State University. He is especially interested in using immersive technology in his teaching to bring students face-to-face with culture and biology. He created the virtual anthropology museum AnVRopomotron, which won the first Poly Award for Best Educational Experience, and is working on PaleoCalifornia, which turns the Pleistocene into a virtual reality theme park ride. He was also a recent research fellow at SDSU's Virtual Immersive Learning and Teaching center, in which he launched the current project on masks. Irene Gonzalez received her M.A. in Latin American Studies from San Diego State University, where her research focused on cultural preservation.
