Held every summer since 1998, the Carlsbad Village Association’s Art in the Village will return on Sunday, June 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for its 27th year! This one-day, open-air art show brings together 150 local and regional fine artists for a dynamic, coastal-influenced art show. All artwork is juried guaranteeing excellent quality in a wide variety of mediums including oil, watercolor, mixed media, digital, glasswork, photography, woodworking, jewelry, pottery, sculpture, and more. Patrons can interact with the artists in their booths, and all artwork on display is for purchase. Celebrating the dynamic art culture in Carlsbad Village and the surrounding areas, this annual event attracts approximately 10,000 art enthusiasts each year. Starting at 10 a.m., just two blocks from Carlsbad State Beach, attendees can browse vibrant exhibits and meet the artists along State Street and Grand Avenue. Art in the Village also features: • Three musical acts, including live performance art on the State Street Main Stage. • Local sidewalk musicians playing throughout the venue during the day. • Live glassblowing by Barrio Glassworks. • Sculpting with live models by Lieu de Sculpture. • Chalk Zone with live painting by multiple local and regional artists. • Free art making pavilion for children and their families, called "Pop-Up Art: An Interactive Encounter," operated by the City of Carlsbad Cultural Arts. • Face painting for kids. Learn to weave on a Tapestry Loom! Saturdays, February 22, March 1 & 8, from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Have you always been intrigued by beautiful handwoven textiles, wanted to understand how they were made, and maybe learn this ancient craft? Then this is a class for you. In this 3-day workshop (over three weeks), you will be introduced to the age-old practice of weaving and discover the rewarding aspect of creating objects for useful or decorative purpose. Weaving can also be a meditative parenthesis in our fast-paced world. You will learn the basic weaving techniques needed to set you on your weaver’s journey such as: – How to warp a tapestry loom – Plain tapestry weave (single and double weft tapestry) – Weft interlock and slit weave – Weft-faced color blending – Turkish knots (if we have sufficient time). We will weave a sampler and a final project representing different learned techniques. Students will work on a vertical tapestry loom (18”×24”) which can be taken home each week to practice and work on the project assigned. A variety of yarn will be available. Students are welcome to bring their own yarn, as well as a heavy metal fork to use as beater to pack the weft threads down. A security deposit of $50 will be required at the beginning of the class for the loan of the loom during the duration of the class. Learn to Warp & Weave! February 8, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (w/1 hr lunch break) Learn the ancient fiber craft of weaving your own fabric using a sustainably harvested wooden Rigid Heddle Loom and soft natural fibers. In his hands-on workshop, instructor Jeanine Ertl will teach you everything you need to know to warp and weave on your own. This class is perfect for anyone who’s been curious about weaving beyond a lap loom and wants to learn the warping and weaving processes. We’ll dive into fiber & fabric and demystify the process of getting set up (otherwise known as warping a loom), weaving, and finally, finishing and removing a woven fiber good from the loom! And, you’ll go home with handwoven fabric in-hand. Length of the final piece will depend on the individual’s own pace. In this workshop you’ll learn: * How a Rigid Heddle Loom works; * How to Plan a Textile (e.g. sett, basic pattern & choosing fiber, etc.) * How to Warp a Rigid Heddle; * How to Weave; * How to Remove your Woven; * And, How to Finish a freshly Handwoven Textile.
