  • Have you been trying to muster up the energy to complete your creative project for a while now? Are you recently retired, perhaps, and looking to get back into that artistic hobby you always loved before LIFE took over? Or maybe you work in an artistic field, always on other people’s projects…just never on your own? This powerful, seven-week course is for novices and working artists of all types, including writers, visual artists, actors, dancers, musicians…ANYONE who recognizes their innate creativity! In a supportive and safe setting we will: • work through the chapters and exercises in The Artist’s Way • take a look “behind the scenes”–those people, places, things in both our past and present that keep us from plunging forward with our art • hold ourselves accountable to daily/weekly creative practices and (at least!) one project each that we will share at the last class • discover new processes to make us more pro-active and productive • re-discover joy, in little things, in one another, and in our day to day lives. Bring a copy of The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron and a 9″ x 11” unlined sketchbook. No previous art experience required.
  • From San Diego weekend arts events (KPBS feature): Friday night, catch a screening of Marvel's 2018 movie "Black Panther" at The Shell, with the San Diego Symphony performing Ludwig Göransson’s incredible score live. Featured in the performance is the Senegal-based musician Massamba Diop, who performs on the "talking drum," or dùndún, which was used in the soundtrack to underscore the actions of T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman). Diop himself can be heard in the actual soundtrack, and will be joining the San Diego Symphony for this performance. The instrument, generally a hourglass, tension drum with a head on each side, is known as the talking drum for a reason: it truly can mimic the speech patterns of the Yorùbá language and is used by Yorùbá drummers to share poetry, prayers or announcements. Here's a segment about Massamba Diop from WBUR's Here & Now program from 2018. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS From the organizers: Anthony Parnther, conductor Massamba Diop, talking drum soloist San Diego Symphony Orchestra In 2018 Marvel Studios’ Black Panther quickly became a global sensation and cultural phenomenon, showing a new dimension of what Super Hero films could be. Rolling Stone raved, “The film lights up the screen with a full-throttle blast of action and fun. That’s to be expected. But what sneaks up and floors you is the film’s racial conscience and profound, astonishing beauty.” Now you can relive the excitement of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) becoming king and battling Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) all while the San Diego Symphony Orchestra performs Ludwig Göransson’s Oscar®-winning score live to picture.
  • The collection of photographs that Dr. Larry Friedman put together reflects an emotional and intimate approach. He collected work that resonated with him, that spoke to him in a profound way. He was a fearless collector interested in contemporary work that challenged the notion of what photography can be. The images shown in Legacy: Larry Friedman Collection represent a range of processes like the artfully crafted Photoshop work of Dutch artist Ruud van Empel or the platinum/palladium imagery of Japanese artist Takeshi Shikama. Date | Friday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Location | Museum of Photographic Arts This exhibit is available through September 11. Pay what you wich admission. • Approximately 300 men, women and children are sleeping outdoors in a makeshift camp between the primary and secondary border walls in San Ysidro.
  • Screening of the documentary, "Courage," featuring 7 amazing men, two who were children when they became prisoners of the German and Japanese armies during World War Two and 5 men who endured the torture at the "Hanoi Hilton" during the Vietnam War. What did it take for these men to survive being a prisoner of war? Courage is the catch all word meaning, “To do something in spite of your fears”, But what gives one courage? Some say duty, want to get home, or hatred for the enemy. Our featured former prisoners show us that there were a variety of factors that gave them the courage to carry on. Proceeds benefit NAMPOW and the work of PISANO Artistry.
