The Escondido Public Art Commission and Escondido City Council – together with the Escondido Downtown Business Association and Visit Escondido – announce April as ‘Arts, Culture and Creativity Month’ (ACCM) in Escondido. Throughout the month (of April), Escondido will host a variety of free events and resources in celebration of arts, culture, and creativity. The Public Art Commission is excited to fund nine projects that celebrate Arts, Culture, and Creativity Month this spring. All events are free to the public. The following are the recipients and the funded projects: - ArtHatch will host a month-long April Arts Showcase beginning April 12 - ESCO Alley Art & Downtown Business Association will complete a Community Unity School Initiative project at John Paul the Great University - CoLabCrafts will host weekly Escondido Makes Art workshops tailored to various ages and skill levels. - Escondido Arts Association will hold the Mayor's Art Contest and Exhibition, April 9 – May 2 A gallery reception will take place April 12 from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. - Escondido Choral Arts Foundation and California Center for the Arts, Escondido will host a First Wednesday at The Center Concert. The musical festival showcase will be on April 2 from 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. - Glass House Arts and California Center for the Arts will display a temporary sculpture installation * (pronounced star). The installation will be on display all month on the lawn of the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. - Escondido Arts Partnership will host two events: o Local Color and Ripple Effects, and o An opening day event in Heritage Garden on April 1. - Stone & Glass and California Center for the Arts will present a live glass blowing demonstration April 18 and 19 - Daydream Here Gift Shop will host an Escondido Art Tank a Shark Tank style pitch event on April 28. In addition to the events listed (above), Escondido’s MAGEC (Museums and Art Growing Escondido Culture) group is planning a full month of activities, including: - Art scavenger hunts, - Guided sculpture and mural walks, - Educational opportunities, - Pop-up art galleries and shows, - Hands-on art activities, and - 2nd Saturday Art Walk. The projects funded by the Public Art Commission are free. Some of the other activities may be ticketed or fee base, and may require reservations, while others are “drop-in.” Escondido takes pride in its well-established and diverse arts and culture community, which supports hundreds of artists. A cartographer, a composer, a neurobiologist, and a novelist are among the recipients of this year's "Genius Grants." Each Fellow will receive a no-strings attached award of $800,000.

A year after publishing his Surrealist Manifesto, Breton organized the first group exhibition for La peinture surréaliste in the Gallery Pierre in Paris. It included work by Giorgio de Chirico, Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, Jean Arp, Max Ernst, Joan Miró, André Masson, Man Ray, Jean Tanguy, and Pierre Roy. New members joined the group in 1929: former Dadaist Tristan Tzara, Salvador Dalí, filmmaker Luis Bunuel, and sculptor Alberto Giacometti. A group of talented women artists have long stood in the shadow of their famous male peers. This lecture also explores the contributions of Leonora Carrington, photographer Dora Mar, Lee Miller, and Meret Oppenheim. The beginning of WWII scattered the surrealist group all over the world. About Cornelia Feye: Cornelia Feye has a MA in art history and anthropology from the University of Tübingen, Germany. She traveled around the world for seven years before landing in New York City, where she was an art educator at the Jacques Marchais Museum for Tibetan Art on Staten Island. After moving to San Diego, she added the Museum of Art and the Mingei International Museum to her education résumé, and for 10 years she was Director of the School of the Arts and Arts Education at the Athenaeum of Music & Arts. Feye has taught Western and non-Western art history at colleges and universities in San Diego and continues to lecture at UCSD with an emphasis on women artists and conceptual art. Feye has blended her knowledge of art history with her love of writing in five art mystery novels, including "Spring of Tears," which, along with her short story anthology "Magic, Mystery & Murder" won San Diego Book Awards. As publisher of Konstellation Press, she gives a voice to independent authors. She currently lives in Ocean Beach, California, where she enjoys writing, rollerblading and looking for the green flash. The only place to begin a discussion of modernism in San Diego is with Irving J. Gill. But what was his legacy? Were all his progressive ideas lost amidst the fashion for Spanish revivalism? We will look at the work of Gill’s protégé Richard Requa in a new light and see how he provides a link with the architects of the midcentury. The lecture will conclude with an examination of San Diego’s rogue architect, William Kesling. About the presenters: Presenters include Dr. Mark Hargreaves, Rector of St. James-by-the-Sea in La Jolla, Hallie Swenson an architectural designer in San Diego, Keith York, an architectural writer and real estate agent specializing in architect designed homes, and independent curator Dave Hampton. Hargreaves, author of The Sacred Architecture of Irving J. Gill. (2023), was inspired by a lifelong interest in the visual arts to complete a master's degree at The National Gallery and King's College in London on the topic of Christianity and the arts. Since moving to San Diego, he has had a keen interest in capturing the architectural history of San Diego. Hallie Swenson studied traditional architecture and urbanism in England at University of Buckingham, the architectural history of England at the University of Cambridge, King's College, and Roman architecture at the University of Notre Dame, Rome. She contributed an essay to Clive Aslet’s book The Academy, which celebrates the work of renowned traditionalist architect John Simpson.
