About the performance: Monica Bill Barnes & Company is thrilled to return to San Diego Dance Theater/Light Box Theater to workshop their newest show. Many Happy Returns brings us back to the theater to celebrate what it means to gather. Created by Robbie Saenz de Viteri and Monica Bill Barnes, "Many Happy Returns" combines language and movement that reflect back on the internal interactions that populated our pandemic minds and celebrate the awkward first steps as we move forward and decide again, who do we want to be now? Many Happy Returns is a work in progress, much like ourselves in this moment, and will change with each performance based on the audience each night. "Many Happy Returns was an absolute artistic balm in these complex times. I have never worked on a piece of art that has been so connected to the current moment, that was able to meet the nervousness and complication of gathering in space with a generous, open, celebratory spirit that moved audiences to tears...It was so moving to watch the audience experience the joy of the piece, the reminder of why we gather, why we share art together, and to be reminded myself..." --Lisa McNulty, Artistic Director of New York City's Off Broadway theater, WP Theater Related links: Monica Bill Barnes on Instagram San Diego Dance Theater on Instagram San Diego Dance Theater on Facebook
  • From the museum: Oceanside Museum of Art celebrates the storied career of the Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, Don Bartletti with an exhibition featuring photography captured throughout his over 40-year career. Don Bartletti: Elusive Moments-Enduring Stories will open January 22 and run through May 1. From the artist: “My approach to photojournalism lies somewhere between cultural anthropology and a scavenger hunt. Before I step out of the newsroom or my front door, I’ve already spent minutes, hours, days, weeks, or sometimes years of research on a subject. I’m focusing long before I pick up the camera. Planning can be as simple as reading a weather report or as complicated as understanding causes and consequences of international migration. Even if I know when the sun will set in Carlsbad or where emigrants will cross the U.S./Mexico border, the essential story-telling moment is inevitably hiding in plain sight. That’s where the “scavenger hunt” comes in—but it’s not a game. It’s a purposeful search for emotions, personalities, circumstances, and moments that will beg the viewer to critically question or simply appreciate what they see in the picture." — Don Bartletti (read more via OMA) Related links: Oceanside Museum of Art on Instagram Oceanside Museum of Art on Facebook
