Whether its in the studio, garage, kitchen, garden, or pottery wheel, make your apron work for you. In this 4-hour class you will learn to cut, design, and sew a gathered apron with waistband tie and bib. You will learn to measure for your fit, make straps and ties, discuss fabric anatomy, choose pocket placement and construction, and have the option to add ruffles, pin tucks, gathers &/or pleats for embellishment. Pockets and ruffles where you want them!All materials are included. However, if you’d like to bring your own fabric &/or matching thread, you are welcome to bring 2-3 yards of a light weight to light canvas fabric (most home sewing machines cannot handle sewing through multiple layers of thick canvas fabric so please don’t bring any to this class).Please note, if bringing your own sewing machine, it is very important to make sure it is fully functional before class. The UC San Diego Library is hosting professor emeritus of cognitive science Jaime Pineda to discuss his new book “Controlling Mental Chaos: Harnessing the Power of the Creative Mind.” At the event, Pineda will discuss the story of mental chaos, framing it in an understandable narrative of why it happens and what can be done. It starts with our exquisite, original mind — adaptable, creative and curious. As we grow, its open nature gets stymied by attempts to protect it from the insults of life. This protective function creates a false sense of self that interferes with our creative problem-solving. The unhealthy ego misjudges and misinterprets the internal (interoceptive) and external (exteroceptive) signals we perceive. Other functions, such as language, further distort and create anxiety, fear and an out-of-control mind. The more the mind spins, the more it feels mentally separated from the body, and the fainter the signals from the body become. At a minimum, we need to reconnect mind and body; bypass the egoic mind, its distortion field and its autobiographical memory dependency so that instead of acting from what we know, we respond to the contingencies of the moment; and finally, provide space for more divergent (creative, open-ended) processing. All these activities occur when we practice mindful or open awareness. This is confirmed by science and the subjective experiences of practitioners who have practiced mindfulness for thousands of years. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Copies of Pineda’s book will be available for purchase from the UC San Diego Bookstore at the event. A book signing will follow at the conclusion of the lecture. 12:30-1:30 p.m. "Ray Harryhausen: An Animated Life": This lecture details the career of Ray Harryhausen (1920-2013), a man who personifies movie magic. Harryhausen was a master animator and special effects creator who produced stop-motion animation effects known as "dynamation," in which characters interact with the live-action world. Some of Harryhausen's films include "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers," "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad," and "Jason and the Argonauts," which includes a battle sequence considered to be the greatest stop-motion sequence ever filmed. 2-4 p.m. Stop-Motion Animation workshop in the museum's Makerspace Comic-Con Museum on Facebook / Instagram
