Come make a wish! A FREE, Family event. The ribbon cutting for the butterfly maze at Chollas Lake will be from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday March 22nd celebrating Spring Equinox. It will be a Sharing... meaning that you bring something to share. That could be food, beverage or you play music or plant a flower in the butterfly garden or something else… The name of this interactive installation is "The Wishing Machine." It is an extension of my body of work: Urban Succession. It is a maze made of raised planter boxes that are filled with butterfly flowers. The center of the maze is a wishing well. Around 300 students from Patrick Henry High researched the ecosystem of Chollas Lake and illustrated their studies onto the sides of the boxes. I hand made the bricks of the wishing well and painted the words wishing well in the 6 main languages of City Heights. (Under the roof is “The Secret Sky”) Many people and organizations have collaborated in the making of this project. Lumber Cycle donated the wood, Biology Through Art donated the paint, and City Farmers Nursery donated the soil. San Pasqual Winery is celebrating 15 years at their downtown La Mesa Tasting Room located on La Mesa Blvd. this December with festive wine events for the public to enjoy, including a Bubble Bash Tasting Event from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 8th. The Hausmann Quartet and Maritime Museum of San Diego are excited to partner to present the ninth season of Haydn Voyages: Music at the Maritime, a quarterly concert series performed aboard one of the Museum’s historic world-class vessels, the 1898 steam ferryboat Berkeley that operated for 60 years on San Francisco Bay. All concerts are Sundays at 2:30 p.m., and include an intermission for a total length of under two hours. Each creative program will also include informative and entertaining commentary between selections from noted UC Santa Barbara musicologist Derek Katz. Sunday, November 24 Concert Details Revolution When we think of art as “revolutionary,” we are most often considering the content of the work itself. This program also asks us to consider the context of its creation, as the opening Haydn quartet (opus 55, no. 2 “Razor”) is followed by Victor Ullmann’s third string quartet, written in 1943 in the Theresienstadt concentration camp. The second half features Gabriela Smith’s raucous Carrot Revolution, and the ninth season ends in epic fashion with Beethoven’s final work, his Quartet in F Major, opus 135. Artist James Hubbell has a 70-plus-year career as a contemporary master who expresses himself through nature-inspired art, architecture and functional objects and spaces. Using stone and glass, paint and pen, wood and steel, his works are natural and unconfined. His human and nature-centric design places art in walls, roofs, floors, and furnishings, not separate from, but as extensions of life. In Hubbell’s world, the everyday is elevated to art, and art is for every day. Hubbell recognizes that it is our cities, buildings, structures - our treatment of our environment -that are perhaps our truest expressions of our views and values, our understanding of the ordering of the universe in which we live. Without great fanfare or financial reward, James Hubbell, the non-architect builder, personally led the design and construction of multiple architectural and fine art projects that accomplished meaningful social and educational transformation in Tijuana and San Diego. Architectural designer, sculptor, painter, stained-glass artist, community activist - James Hubbell is one of San Diego’s most prolific artists. His Architecture of Jubilation - is an invitation for all of us to create the world we want to live in. The Opening Reception will feature musician Pablo Dodero! Pablo is a producer, DJ, and writer originally from Tijuana, México. He is currently working on his PhD in Music at UCSD researching Mexico's electronic music history. He has been involved in the DIY music scene in Tijuana, San Diego, and Los Angeles for over two decades and currently performs experimental electronic music under the names Adiós Mundo Cruel and Les Temps Barbares. This exhibition was made possible by a collaboration between the San Diego Public Library, the San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture, the Library Foundation SD and the Ilan-Lael Foundation. This Project is an official community initiative of the World Design Capital San Diego/ Tijuana 2024. Featured programming will be occurring throughout the exhibition run. Michael Tilson Thomas, conductor Parker van Ostrand, piano San Diego Symphony Orchestra Michael Tilson Thomas: Street Song for Symphonic Brass Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43 Tchaicovsky: Symphony No. 1 in G minor, Op. 13, Winter Daydreams Jean Sibelius once said of a summer sailing trip in the Baltic Sea: “If only foreigners could see the granite rocks emerging from the water here, they would understand why I write for orchestra as I do!” Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä is a leading authority on the music of Jean Sibelius, having recorded all seven of the composer’s symphonies. On this program, he leads the Symphony first in Sibelius’ dark and brooding tone poem Tapiola. One of this composer’s final works before he ceased writing in the late 1920s, this music evoking Tapio, the forest spirit from ancient pre-Christian Finnish mythology, was written to a commission from the New York Philharmonic. Sibelius’s much loved Fifth Symphony was also inspired by the natural landscape of his home country, and especially by his intense response to the beautiful flight of whooper swans, returning in the spring to breed on the lakes and waters of Finland. Rounding out the program is Beethoven’s Emperor piano concerto performed by Finnish pianist and Beethoven expert Paavali Jumppanen, praised for the “overflowing energy of his musicianship” by The New York Times.
