On Saturday, March 22, 2025, the Escondido Union School District and the California Center for the Arts, Escondido Foundation will present the 13th annual smART Festival from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido (340 N. Escondido Blvd). The event is free and open to the public. Each year, the Center dedicates its Museum and Center Theater to celebrating the creativity of local youth, showcasing the impact of its long-standing partnership with the Escondido Union School District in bringing arts education to schools. This vibrant community festival highlights student achievements in the visual and performing arts. Artwork from students across all 24 Escondido Union schools will be on display, with two-dimensional and three-dimensional pieces featured in the Museum. Meanwhile, the Center Theater will host youth dance and music performances throughout the day.

From the organizers: The first opera San Diego Opera produced, this beloved masterwork follows the lives of a group of young struggling artists in Paris, including the poet Rodolfo and the seamstress Mimì, as they navigate love, friendship, and hardship. Full of some of the greatest melodies and arias Puccini ever composed, the production is inspired by San Diego Opera’s acclaimed 2020 drive-in La bohème centered in Rodolfo’s memory of an unforgettable romance. These performances feature thrilling debuts and the exciting return of many SDO favorites. With Kathleen O’Mara as Mimì (Nov. 1 & 3), Sarah Tucker as Mimì (Nov. 2), Joshua Blue as Rodolfo (Nov. 1 & 3), César Delgado as Rodolfo (Nov. 2), Latonia Moore as Musetta, Leroy Davis as Marcello, Harold Wilson as Colline, and Søren Pedersen as Schaunard. Lidiya Yankovskaya will also make her first appearance with San Diego Opera, conducting the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. She has conducted more than 40 world premieres, including 17 operas. Keturah Stickann – a visionary director whose work has appeared with opera companies around the world – will reprise her role as director of La bohème after having directed San Diego Opera’s innovative drive-in production in 2020. On Saturday, April 26, 2025, the public is invited to participate in this event which is more than just a fundraiser; it is an opportunity to come together as a community, experience the creativity of wearable art, and connect over shared stories, food, and laughter. The event will include the following: · A Wearable Art Show, featuring garments inspired by historical events and reimagined for modern expression. · A Hands-On Art Engagement, where community members can create and explore textile art firsthand. · A lively atmosphere of gathering over delicious food and drinks, fostering meaningful connections. · Silent and Live Auctions, showcasing a stunning collection of artwork, experiences, and exclusive items, all to support our goal of raising necessary funds to empower artists and sustain our mission. The event starts at 5:30 pm with delicious food and drinks along with an art engagement where attendees can create and explore textile art firsthand.
