Beyond Land Acknowledgments Workshop Tuesday, Nov. 19 | 1-3 p.m. | Intertribal Resource Center (SSC 187) Beyond Land Acknowledgements, led by ITRC Coordinator Michaela Allen Sanchez (Lipan Apache and Mexican-American), is an engaging and introspective workshop aimed at moving beyond traditional land acknowledgments towards fostering genuine support and allyship for Native students and communities at UC San Diego and beyond. In this session, participants will delve into critical discussions about their positionalities and explore departmental protocols to identify opportunities for growth and advocacy. Through interactive activities and guided reflections, participants will develop a deeper understanding of creating tangible forms of support. By the end of the workshop, attendees will walk away equipped with actionable items to enact positive change for the betterment of Native communities within their spheres of influence. The Intertribal Resource Center is located on the 1st floor of the Student Services Center in SSC Room #187. We are located at the corner of Rupertus Way and Myers Drive, south of Price Center East. Every November, UC San Diego recognizes and celebrates the achievements, cultures, and contributions of Native American people and tribes during Native American Heritage Month. Education specialists say high caseloads mean they can’t give students and their families the attention they need.

Maritime Museum of San Diego, home to one of the world’s largest collections of historic vessels, fascinating exhibits, and on-the-water adventure guest experiences, will host the 5th Annual Oceanography Merit Badge Days Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 15, July 27 and Aug. 10, 2024. Scouts BSA youth may enroll to earn their Oceanography Merit Badge through participation in one of three Saturday classes at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. Scouts must complete one class to earn their Oceanography Merit Badge so participants can choose the date that works for them. The program gives local scouting youth the opportunity to more deeply explore the ocean that is so integral to the San Diego community. By combining field work, laboratory observation, and scholarly discussion, Oceanography Merit Badge Days at the Maritime Museum of San Diego allow scouts to become fully immersed in the multiple branches of oceanographic research. An OMB Days scouting parent participant shared their enthusiasm for the program stating, “Several of our troop scouts thoroughly enjoyed working on the Oceanography MB at the Maritime Museum. You could not ask for a better venue that allowed the kids to be out of a typical classroom environment. Scouts sure did enjoy hands-on experiences, exploring the museum and engaging with the great counselors." Each scout or group of scouts are required to be accompanied by a parent or adult chaperone. All Scouts BSA Youth Protection guidelines must be followed at any event with registered Scouts present. Reservations must be done online in advance at sdmaritime.org.
