Join in the joy of live, up-close storytelling--the original social media. Tellabration!™ is a worldwide synchronous celebration of storytelling. Our Ocean Beach storytelling concert reflects on the theme of "In a Grain of Sand". This phrase is parsed from a poem by William Blake--"To see the world in a grain of sand". Come hear members of Storytellers of San Diego interpret and expand on the theme with humor, empathy and pathos. Tales are personal, original, folkloric, literary. The storytellers are Marilyn McPhie, Jim Dieckmann, Emily Stamets, Patchwork Story Theatre (Patti Christensen and James Nelson-Lucas,) Carol Jaksa, JT Moring with guitar, Aunt Li-Anne, and David Schmidt. In this talk, scholar Che Gossett focuses on Kiyan Williams’s performance and sculpture especially: "Unearthing" (2016), Trash and Treasure" (2014) "Meditations on the Making of America" (2019), "Ruins of Empire II or The Earth Swallows the Master’s House" (2024). In Williams’s work, anti-black and racial capitalist World is negated and abolished — in its ruination new critical forms crystallize and figurations of the flesh emerge, reverberating and interinanimating each other. Che Gossett is a Black nonbinary femme writer and critical theorist specializing in queer/trans studies, aesthetic theory, abolitionist thought, and Black studies. Gossett’s writing appears in publications including the edited collections "Death and Other Penalties: Continental Philosophers on Prisons and Capital Punishment" (Fordham University Press, 2015), "Trap Door: Trans Cultural Production and the Politics of Visibility" (MIT Press, 2017), and "Trans Philosophy" (University of Minnesota Press, 2024). Che is co-editing, with Tavia Nyong’o, a forthcoming special issue of Social Text journal on Sylvia Wynter, culture, and technics. They are the recipient of a 2024 Creative Capital Andy Warhol Writers Grant, and are currently associate director of the Center for Research in Feminist, Queer, and Transgender Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.

From the organizers: San Diego Dance Theater annually seeks newly emerging dancemakers to participate in the Emerging Choreographers Showcase & Awards, a competition that awards three prizes to participants: Best Overall Choreography, Best Dancer, and Audience Favorite. This exhilarating show is a beloved staple in San Diego, with its main purpose being to bring exposure and support to growing choreographers in the community. In 2023, we removed the age requirements to include dancemakers who emerge at any age in life. Read about the 2024 finalists here. About the showcase and awards: San Diego Dance Theater is thrilled to present the annual Emerging Choreographer's Showcase & Awards! The event formerly known as Young Choreographer's Showcase & Prize has evolved to reflect the agelessness of dance and support the pursuit of growth at any point in life. There is no longer a maximum age limit for eligibility, and we hope to see even more incredible dancing and dance-making! Finalists will compete for three prizes, as voted on by YOU, the audience, and the panel of judges. Grand prize is $1000 and a night in Live Arts Fest 2024 awarded to "Best Overall." "Best Dancer" and "Audience Favorite" both receive a $500 prize, with "Best Dancer" also receiving an invitation to dance at a future SDDT event.
