"Ostentatious Oasis" – A New Exhibition by Dave Kinsey Confronts Humanity’s Delusions of Permanence. Oolong Gallery is pleased to present Ostentatious Oasis, a solo exhibition by San Diego based painter Dave Kinsey, opening March 15th and running through April 15th. In his first solo exhibition in four years, this body of work—a continuation of Kinsey’s ongoing Existential Synthesis series—confronts humanity’s precarious relationship with nature and the self-imposed isolation that blinds us to its realities. For this exhibition, Kinsey employs disjointed marble figures as metaphors for human arrogance— symbolizing illusions of purity and permanence that fracture under the weight of our own actions. White marble, historically tied to wealth and power, becomes a symbol of hubris, crumbling in contrast to the consequences of human advancement: wars that displace, disasters that devastate, and relentless exploitation that erodes the natural world. How do we as humans coexist or even adapt within these uncanny and divergent spaces? What will become of our modern way of living that seems at odds with the natural rhythm of our planet?" the artist asks. Set within surreal, urbane environments, the figures reflect humanity’s disconnection from nature, insulated within artificial comforts that distort our perception of reality. Through deep earth tones and fluid, dreamlike compositions, Kinsey invites viewers to confront these fragile constructs and reimagine humanity’s role—not as masters of the Earth, but as beings inextricably bound to it. Influenced by a pivotal trip to Florence in 2022, Kinsey draws upon the grandeur of Renaissance sculpture while subverting its ideals through a surrealist lens. This synthesis of historical reverence and contemporary existential inquiry defines Ostentatious Oasis, bridging past and present in an urgent reflection on civilization’s fragility. "CARLOS CASTRO ARIAS: THE SPLINTER IN THE EYE" Oct. 19, 2024 – Jan. 11, 2025 Opening Reception: Friday, Oct. 18 from 6:30–8:30 p.m. Carlos Castro Arias will be exhibiting his newest project, "The Splinter in the Eye," an installation composed of paintings and objects in which the artist reflects about memory, trauma, and elements of the individual and collective identity. Carlos Castro Arias is a Colombian artist, professor, and musician. He received a BA from the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano, Bogota in 2002 and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 2008 to the San Francisco Art Institute, where he received an MFA in painting in 2010. Castro has been an associate professor at San Diego State University since 2019. In 2022, the Museo Universitario Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia exhibited a retrospective of his work entitled La Vida de las Cosas Muertas (The Life of Dead Things). Most recently Castro Arias has exhibited at Artpace, San Antonio; Bread & Salt, San Diego; LA Galería, Bogota; Quint Gallery, La Jolla, and Espacio El Dorado, Bogota. He has participated in group shows in Sweden, Peru, France, Spain, New Zealand, Mexico and Venezuela. His musical projects include: POPO (2000), Los Claudios de Colombia (2005-2010) and Amor Negro (2020). The artist lives and works between San Diego, Tijuana, and Bogota. (Members-only) Solo Piano Concert and Reception with Rossina Grieco Wednesday, March 5, 2025 Born and raised in La Jolla, California, Rossina Grieco began piano studies at the age of four. After achieving international recognition within the first few years of her career, the Italo-Shanghainese prodigy and wunderkind made her formal solo debut. At eight years old, Grieco played to a sold-out Copley Hall as the youngest pianist to ever grace its stage with the San Diego Symphony. Critics hailed Grieco as a prodigy “well beyond her years,” citing Grieco as “an absolute star, bringing audiences to their feet.” At age 11, Grieco was accepted at The Juilliard School of Music. During her teen years, she premiered at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, with standing ovations for her performance of Chopin’s First Piano Concerto. Grieco continued to tour extensively throughout Europe and Asia. Grieco has received recognition from illustrious artists, such as Gary Graffman (Curtis Institute), Dmitri Bashkirov (Tchaikovsky Competition, Reina Sofia School), Dame Fanny Waterman DBE (Leeds Competition), Gábor Takács-Nagy (Takács Quartet, Verbier Festival), and Yu Long (China Philharmonic). Grieco continued to distinguish herself through remarkable achievements while attending the Glen Gould School for which she was unanimously chosen. Grieco is the longest-standing recipient and only female winner of the Ihnatowycz Prize in piano, an award previously held by Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki. During her studies, she developed almost 60 hours of solo, chamber, and concerti repertoire while debuting six albums across all streaming platforms. Having signed a two-year contract with British boutique management company Polyphony Arts, Grieco continues her artistic pursuits and is happily married.
