From the organizers: For 24 years, the Athenaeum has presented unforgettable festivals featuring Gustavo Romero performing the complete piano repertoire of a specific composer. Whether you have been with us all 24 years or have yet to experience the wonder of this artist—who plays from memory—you will not want to miss our upcoming 25th Summer Festival. Romero, a native San Diegan, with a heritage in Guadalajara, first performed at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library as a young boy, and it was with him that the Athenaeum planned its first Summer Festival in 1999, the organization's 100th anniversary. Each year, Romero chooses composers to study in depth, sharing the full range of their artistry. Dinners will be offered at the Athenaeum after the first and last concerts (July 7 and 28), providing an opportunity for concertgoers to socialize, meet Mr. Romero, and share a delicious meal. All concerts begin at 4 PM at the Athenaeum. The Gelli plate is an incredible tool for making monoprints without a press. We will use it to create unique multilayer prints using slow drying Golden OPEN paints. In this class, you will learn how to apply paint onto a Gelli plate; create masks and stamps; incorporate stencils and foliage; build up multiple layers; and learn to transfer magazine images. The resulting monoprints will then be incorporated into designed compositions on heavy paper. Materials: All materials are provided with the fee paid to the instructor. They include Gelli plate; brayer; Golden OPEN acrylic paints, regular acrylic paints; stencils, stamps, textures, variety of papers are included for use during the class. “The Role of Compassion in Social Change,” this year’s luncheon hosted by the Center for Jewish Care, features Rabbi Dr. Shmuly Yanklowitz in conversation with Michael Hopkins, CEO of Jewish Family Service, about how acts of compassion can bridge divides, heal communities and drive systemic change. The afternoon focuses on how the core Jewish value of compassion can serve as a catalyst for social transformation. In this thought-provoking discussion, Rabbi Shmuly, a global social justice activist, published author, educator and speaker will reference contemporary case studies and his own experiences. This discussion focuses on how San Diegans as individuals and a community can practice compassion – through empathy, integrity and kindness – in today’s increasingly complicated world. The luncheon, a part of the Center for Jewish Care’s ongoing work to help San Diegans access critical services for their immediate needs, is a fundraiser for Jewish Family Service of San Diego.
