New Orleans–native Sullivan Fortner has gained wide recognition as one of the most accomplished jazz musicians of his generation. His accolades include the 2015 Cole Porter Fellowship, the Leonore Annenberg Arts Fellowship, the 2016 Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists and, in 2020, the Shifting Foundation Grant for artistic career development. A Grammy Award–winner, he has earned recognition in multiple DownBeat Critics Polls, winning first place as both Rising Star Pianist and Rising Star Jazz Artist. His broad range of musical associations includes artists such as Roy Hargrove, Stefon Harris, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Ambrose Akinmusire, and Wynton Marsalis. Palomar Performing Arts Proudly Presents Iona Pay is a freelance French hornist performing across SoCal with the American Youth Symphony, the Santa Monica Symphony, the Southern California Brass Consortium, the New West Symphony, the Coronado Philharmonic, and other ensembles. She also performs in opera and musical pits, chamber ensembles and studio sessions in Los Angeles and San Diego. Passionate about brass chamber music, Iona has attended the American Brass Quintet Seminar at the Aspen Music Festival, and the National Brass Ensemble Academy at SFCM. She recently co-founded the Los Angeles Brass Alliance, an ensemble for early-career brass musicians, and looks forward to commissioning new works and bringing engaging performances to the public with the ensemble. Iona received her bachelor’s in Horn Performance from the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, and simultaneously earned her bachelor’s in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics. She has also been invited to study at Domaine Forget De Charlevoix International Music Festival, Eastern Music Festival, and to perform with The Orchestra Now. Iona is currently pursuing an on-the-ground education in arts entrepreneurship and performance from freelancing in Los Angeles, and studies with Associate Principal of the New York Philharmonic, Richard Deane. In 1974, the first Mission Bay Triathlon was as a run-bike-swim-run event on Fiesta Island by the San Diego Track Club. This is an ON Road Triathlon. This is the 37th annual XTERRA Wetsuits Mission Bay Triathlon benefitting Life Sports Foundation. San Diego is the Birthplace of Triathlon! In 1974, the first Mission Bay Triathlon was as a run-bike-swim-run event on Fiesta Island by the San Diego Track Club. Every year competitors from around the country and from around the world, came to Mission Bay to celebrate the birthplace triathlon. The event offers races for adults and kids, from complete beginners to seasoned Professionals. There are many different races going on simultaneously, and while a traditional Triathlon is Swim / Bike / Run, KOZ Events, the organizer of the San Diego Triathlon Series, offers more of a Multisport Race. Our race is very inclusive and we make triathlon accessible to as many people as possible. We have the traditional Swim/bike/ Run Triathlon but we offer so much more. If you do not like swimming, we have the Duathlon which is a Run/ Bike/ Run, if you don’t want to bike then choose the Aquathlon Swim / Run, or if you don’t want to run choose the Aquabike Swim/Bike. Pacific Arts Movement is thrilled to unveil the dynamic and inspiring film lineup for the 13th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival (SDAFF) Spring Showcase. Taking place at Ultrastar Cinemas in Mission Valley, San Diego, from April 18 to 25, 2024, this year's showcase promises a diverse film line-up spanning over 8 days. Audiences will enjoy a curated selection of 15+ films hailing from China, Hong Kong, Iran, South Korea, and beyond. Among the highlights is a four-film retrospective, Through Tibetan Eyes: the Films of Pema Tseden, honoring the late Tibetan filmmaker Pema Tseden, offering viewers a poignant journey into the modern Tibetan identity through the lens of cinematic mastery. Kicking off the festival on April 18 is the dramedy "The Queen of My Dreams," a nostalgic exploration of familial relationships and personal discovery following the unexpected passing of a Pakistani Canadian woman's father. As she navigates the complexities of her grief, audiences are invited on a heartfelt journey replete with cultural nuances and universal themes. This year’s Sunday Spotlight, Through Tibetan Eyes: the Films of Pema Tseden, is a retrospective on the late Pema Tseden, whose pioneering work in Tibetan cinema continues to resonate with audiences worldwide. Through four of his seminal films, viewers will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Tseden's visionary storytelling and profound exploration of Tibetan identity. In addition to the compelling film lineup, the festival will feature an Asian and Asian American Poetry Jam presented by San Diego Poetry Futures 2024 on April 20. This free event includes a live poetry reading and workshop in collaboration with San Diego Poet Laureate Jason Magabo Perez, providing attendees with an enriching cultural storytelling experience beyond the screen. Bringing the showcase to a close on April 25 is the awe-inspiring documentary "Ashima," which chronicles the extraordinary feats of Ashima Shiraishi, one of the world's youngest elite rock climbers. Against the backdrop of South Africa's rugged terrain, Ashima confronts her greatest challenge yet, captivating viewers with her determination and resilience.
