The event will feature presentations of the Guild’s prestigious Odin Award to four local authors: Matt Coyle, author of the Rick Cahil crime novels; Jonathan Maberry, New York Times best-seller and five-time Bram Stoker Award-winning author; and SDSU professors emeriti Philip Pryde and Bob Riffenburgh for their contributions to science, literary fiction, and non-fiction. The Odin Awards are periodically presented by the Guild in recognition of local authors’ bodies of work. Instituted by Dr. Carl Nelson, past Guild President, Odin Awards have thus far been awarded to over 20 local authors, among them Chet Cunningham, Susan Vreeland, Steve Breen, T. Jefferson Parker, and Alan Russell. A complete list of previous Odin Award recipients is on our website. For four decades, the Guild has served as a San Diego organization dedicated to the advancement of writing and those who pursue it. The Guild has a current membership of over 200 published and aspiring authors. The Guild hosts monthly meetings featuring speakers of interest to the writing community. It also maintains an active website, publishes an annual anthology of members’ works, manages a Manuscript Critique Program, and presents workshops on a variety of writing topics. From gallerist Michael James Armstrong: I’m excited to be showing a new site specific projection by Phil Beaumont. I can’t remember when I first met Phil. It seems he, along with his wife Yuko, have been staples in the San Diego art scene for as long as I’ve lived here. They are routinely some of the most dedicated supporters of local artists and have acquired a well curated collection. Phil is also a talented musician and singer for the band The Color Forty Nine and until recently was the principal at The Museum School for many years. About the exhibition: Phils new body of work is a series of iPhone videos shot in portrait orientation. Varied in subject matter, each video has an overarching theme of quiet solitude and subtle movement that sometimes borders on near stillness. If patient, the viewer is rewarded with an ethereal state of calm. The piece Furano Hotel is a site specific projection that is perfectly situated within Ice Gallery. Just like we all have our own individual lifestyle, our death-style reflects our personal wishes for our end-of-life plans. From documenting your medical preferences to what you'd like to be wearing at your final farewell, each month we'll tackle 2 new topics in a safe, friendly setting. Within a few months you'll have a comprehensive guide for your individual end-of-life plans which can foster a personal sense of peace and create the space for your loved ones to grieve your loss rather than sort through paperwork, close accounts and try to guess what type of ceremony or celebration you would have liked. Let's face it, documenting our wishes isn't something that most people look forward to which is why gathering with like-minded people makes this unpleasant task much more appealing! Here's the workshop flow: 4 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. - Welcome & introductions. 4:15 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. - Topic talk - a short discussion about the 2 monthly topics and overview of the worksheets. 4:30 p.m. - 5 p.m. - Complete the end-of-life decision worksheets (provided) and add them to your binder. 5 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. - Group discussion.
