When: Mondays from 5 - 8 p.m. This is an on-going class. Learn classic nuristani chip carving, a 5,000 year old technique from Afghanistan. Students will carve beginner designs on a soft wood board during this class. Each person will take home their carving designs and the knowledge to practice this new craft on their own. Nuristani inlay designs each have their own meanings that we’ll learn more about in the class. Nuristani inlay is usually made using soft wood. We’ll provide the supplies for each student. This class builds upon itself and renews every 3 weeks. Returning students move on to more complicated designs, and beginning students start with the foundation design and learn to hone beginner skills. Each enrollment is for 3 carving classes. Saturdays, Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22 & Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. No experience necessary. Ages 13+ welcome! Instructor Melissa Ordway will teach the basics of throwing pottery on the wheel. Wheel throwing is a fun process that allows you to make mugs, cups, bowls, and lots of utilitarian objects. Whether you are new to throwing on the wheel or have some experience, you’ll enjoy this class. 5 weeks gives you even more time to practice centering the clay and raising those walls! This class will use mid-fire clay, so after being fired, your work will last for years and years. We will focus on wedging, centering, throwing, trimming and glazing. Projects will be ready to pick up 1-2 weeks after the last class. More about the Author Dr. Olson is Professor Emerita of Radiology at UCSD and a graduate of Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Following a CT Fellowship at UCSD, she joined the faculty in the Department of Radiology where she worked for thirty years. She was director of Breast Imaging for twenty years and also a member of the thoracic imaging section. Some of her many awards include: Marie Curie Award of the American Association of Women Radiologists 1991; Honored Alumna Loma Linda University School of Medicine 1994; UCSD Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award 1996; Rell Sunn “Queen of Makaha” Award, Moores UCSD Cancer Center, 2007; San Diego County’s 2011 Physicians of Exceptional Excellence “Top Doctors” Award; Loma Linda University School of Medicine “Women in Courage” Award 2012; and UCSD Department of Radiology Lifetime Achievement Award 2012.
