  • "In mending and making, we mend ourselves" —Deena Beverly In this hand stitching gathering we will honor a memory, ourselves, someone or something else. As we reflect on our subject we may find clarity, understanding and peace of mind. The time provides space to see with fresh eyes of why this came to pass. We will then express our discovery through color, texture and composition, in a figurative or abstract style with thread, appliqué, color and pattern. Come stitch with us. Nothing is like stitching in community with others. It’s fun, healing and grounding. Nancy will teach you the techniques and walk you through the step-by-step process to assist you with creating your work of art! Nancy’s approach is all about self-expression Please feel free to bring any fabrics or swatch of clothing that you like or has a special meaning that you would like to include in your project. All the sewing and embroidery is done by hand. It’s a slow stitch process. Prerequisites: Please be able to thread a needle, tie a knot repeatedly and make a basic running stitch. (A bonus if you can backstitch.) Materials: Students to bring: A needle or two for sewing and embroidery, embroidery thread or floss, sharp fabric scissors, any fabrics, bits of lace or clothing that has a special meaning, beads or babbles that you would like to include in your project. Instructor to bring: The instructor will provide background fabric, fabric scraps, bits and bobs, embroidery floss and threads, basic tools, samples for inspiration and stitch-sample books. *If you don’t need to use any of the instructors supplies … and you have lots of opaque and transparent fabric scraps, embroidery thread, floss and needles… as-well-as a background fabric in linen or vintage cotton approximately 18x18 you can bring and forego paying instructor for materials. Please pack a snack! *Please note: The best fabric is linen, cotton, or something used or vintage. If you want to stitch on knit fabrics (T-shirt type), you can.   • “Fauvism is not everything, but it is the foundation of everything.”—Henri Matisse Henri Matisse, Andre Derain, and Maurice Vlaminck were the creators of this powerful era in art of the early 1900s. The act of painting itself was at the heart of Fauvism. It was the first movement to insist in explicit terms that a painting is the canvas and the pigments—not the subject. This class will explore the Postimpressionist movement that led to the Fauve movement strongly influencing the art of the 20th century. Leaving behind classic color, perspective, and subject matter and moving into exciting, bold, vibrant colors, spontaneous compositions, and highly gestural application of paint techniques is what we will explore while painting in session. A pink sky? Why not! Come join the fun, freedom, and excitement of expressive Fauve painting. This class is for all levels of painters, both beginning and experienced. You are also welcome to do your own work. This is a good place to be with other talented painters and enjoy the creative atmosphere here at the Athenaeum.   • In this talk, scholar Che Gossett focuses on Kiyan Williams’s performance and sculpture especially: "Unearthing" (2016), Trash and Treasure" (2014) "Meditations on the Making of America" (2019), "Ruins of Empire II or The Earth Swallows the Master’s House" (2024). In Williams’s work, anti-black and racial capitalist World is negated and abolished — in its ruination new critical forms crystallize and figurations of the flesh emerge, reverberating and interinanimating each other. Che Gossett is a Black nonbinary femme writer and critical theorist specializing in queer/trans studies, aesthetic theory, abolitionist thought, and Black studies. Gossett’s writing appears in publications including the edited collections "Death and Other Penalties: Continental Philosophers on Prisons and Capital Punishment" (Fordham University Press, 2015), "Trap Door: Trans Cultural Production and the Politics of Visibility" (MIT Press, 2017), and "Trans Philosophy" (University of Minnesota Press, 2024). Che is co-editing, with Tavia Nyong’o, a forthcoming special issue of Social Text journal on Sylvia Wynter, culture, and technics. They are the recipient of a 2024 Creative Capital Andy Warhol Writers Grant, and are currently associate director of the Center for Research in Feminist, Queer, and Transgender Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.
  • We will explore the fundamentals of watercolor—adding pen-and-ink as well. The class is designed to break down fear and encourage spontaneity. All levels are welcome in this positive and encouraging class. Materials: Paper: two 22” x 30” sheets of 100%, 140 lb., rag, cold-pressed paper (such as Arches or Fabriano). Brushes: one #8, #10, or #12 round brush (with a good point); one 3/4” or 1” flat brush; one large (2” or 2 1/2”) cheap bristle brush (from hardware store). Other: palette (any palette with eight or more color wells will do); water container; sketchbook; two No. 2 pencils; 3/4” or 1”–wide masking tape; small drawing board (Gatorfoam board or Masonite, 12” x 16” minimum); paper towels (Viva preferred). Paint: Any colors you have. Must-have colors (at least 14 ml) are Daniel Smith New Gamboge; Winsor & Newton Burnt Sienna (do not substitute another brand for this one); Alizarin Crimson Permanent; French Ultramarine Blue; Phthalo Blue; Burnt Umber.   • This class will explore the range of techniques possible when using acrylics, with emphasis on saturated color and creativity. Students will be encouraged to paint freely and spontaneously. Materials: Paint: Fast-drying acrylics are recommended, although students may opt for the “open” (slow-drying) type if they prefer. Brand names include Liquitex, Golden, Utrecht, and Winsor & Newton. Colors: Cadmium Yellow Medium, Yellow Oxide or Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light, Naphthol Crimson, Phthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White. Other useful colors: Brilliant Purple, Dioxazine Purple, Hookers Green Deep Hue Permanent. The first six colors and Titanium White are a must-have. Any other colors the student may have are encouraged. Brushes: Brights, #2, #4, #6. (Winsor & Newton University brand is good.); any bristle brush students may have. Supports: Small canvas panels, 5” x 7”, 6” x 8”, 8” x 8”, 8” x 10.” These can be purchased at Michaels (quite inexpensive and good quality).   • The Gelli plate is an incredible tool for making monoprints without a press. We will use it to create unique multilayer prints using slow drying Golden OPEN paints. In this class, you will learn how to apply paint onto a Gelli plate; create masks and stamps; incorporate stencils and foliage; build up multiple layers; and learn to transfer magazine images. The resulting monoprints will then be incorporated into designed compositions on heavy paper. Materials: All materials are provided with the fee paid to the instructor. They include Gelli plate; brayer; Golden OPEN acrylic paints, regular acrylic paints; stencils, stamps, textures, variety of papers are included for use during the class.   • Still-life painting is the study of everyday objects that take on a new life, tell a story and can act as a portal to another place or time. Emphasis in this class will be on an impressionist technique of painting using an alla prima (wet into wet) style of painting, keeping loose brushwork, thick paint, and eliminating detail. We will cover composition, color, form, and lighting. There will be a setup for each class along with photo images to create from. I do a painting demonstration in each class. One of our exercises will be a personal still life using objects that have meaning for us. The best part is that we will have fun as we share our discoveries together. Come join us!   • The sculptural relief combines the dimensionality of sculpture with the compositional demands of drawing to create an exciting artistic challenge. In this course students will make three relief sculptures, each of varying depths (a low-relief, mid-relief and high-relief). We will work with the model as well as with drapery in order to study the way form can be compressed from full dimensionality into low and mid relief.
