Immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of Southern California as we paint “City Sunset”. This is a 2-hour class on 16×20 canvas. Nova Kombucha is a 21-and-up venue located along downtown Ocean Beach’s city strip. There are lots of restaurants and stores within walking distance. Nova does not serve food at this location. You do have the option to bring food with you! There are plenty of food joints along the strip where you can pick up a to-go order. There is also a Target right across the street where you can pick up some snacks. Enjoy the wide variety of Nova Kombucha’s hard kombucha on tap during the event! All supplies are provided and step-by-step instructions are given by local artists for you to create a masterpiece! Make sure to show up 15 minutes in advance for parking. San Diego Craft Collective welcomes Ashley Lohr, a special guest artist and educator from Southeast Alaska! In this workshop, students will be introduced to the art of powder enamel and learn the skills to create 1-pair of torch-fired enamel earrings. Students will be using lead-free Thompson enamel on copper metal. Enamel is a glassy compound applied to and bonded by heat (fusion) to a metal surface. We will be using a handheld butane torch as our heat source. Learn how to prep, sift enamel, clean fire scale, and fire with a handheld butane torch. * Students will have their own enameling station/ will not be sharing materials. * Choose from a variety of copper metal shapes to enamel on. * Work with 11 Thompson powder enamel colors to choose your palette. * Use stencils, sgraffito tools, and frit to create your own unique designs. * All jewelry created will be ready to wear at the end of the workshop. This workshop is for beginners and for those who’d like a refresher. All materials to create 1 pair of earrings. Masks and safety goggles will be provided. This class is appropriate for ages 16 years and older. In this talk, Ramírez will set forth an introduction to brown artistic practices that put neo-colonial and liberal reason in crisis. Furthermore, he seeks to think about the paradoxical relationship between contemporary art and indigeneity as a creative entanglement that reshapes the repertoires of art history and museum collections. Pablo José Ramírez is a curator and an author. He is a curator at the Hammer Museum and co-curated "Made in LA 2023: Acts of Living" together with Diana Nawi. He was the inaugural adjunct curator of "First Nations and Indigenous Art" at Tate Modern (2019-2023). Ramirez was a co-curator of the 19th Paiz Biennale: Transvisible and part of the curatorial team of the 58th Carnegie International. He is the co-founder of Infrasonica, a leading curatorial platform for non-Western sonic cultures. He holds an MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths University of London. Wednesday, February 5 · 1 - 10 p.m. A day-long cypher and battle led by two notable hip hop artists, Johnny Lopez (Johnny 5) and Quentin Robinson (SpecialFX). Johnny5 was born in Oakland and is a Mexican/Latino professional Turf Dancer and the founder of TURFinc - a local Oakland/Bay Area-based company that instills positive changes in the community through dance. SpecialFX is a father of two, a Marine Corps Veteran and the founder of Movement4Movements. At CSUSM, they will share hip hop dance and culture with students, faculty, staff and the local community. The event includes guest lectures, dance workshops and a cypher featuring authentic hip hop dancers, performances, competitions and classes. 5 Tuesdays from 6 – 8 p.m. Sept 10, 17, 24, Oct 1 & 15 In this 5-week series, students will learn the basics of handbuilding to create functional pieces with an emphasis on decorative techniques. Working with mid fire clay, we will explore various methods of building forms and decorative techniques with underglazes and slips. Students will complete multiple projects throughout the course while applying handmade stencils and layering techniques with colorful patterns as well textured colorful designs using the sgraffito technique. Students will be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors through the course. All materials provided.
