Helen Mayer Harrison and Newton Harrison, known as ‘the Harrisons’, dedicated five decades to exploring and demonstrating a new form of artistic practice, centered on “…doing no work that does not attend to the wellbeing of the web of life.” Their collaborative practice pioneered a way of drawing together art and ecology. They closely observed, often with irony and humor, how human intervention disrupts the dynamics of life as a web of interrelationships. The authors ‘think with’ the Harrisons, critically tracing their poetics as a re-imaging and reconfiguring of the arts in response to the unfolding planetary crisis. They draw parallels between the artists’ poetics and rethinking in the philosophy of science, particularly drawing on the philosopher of science, Isabelle Stengers. Thinking with the Harrisons is for anyone concerned with the implications of ecological thought and practice as a reimagining of public life, including the interaction of art and science. Throughout their joint practice, the Harrisons sought to engage policy makers, governments, ecologists, artists, and the natural world, sensitizing us to the crises that emerge from grounded experiences of place and time. From Space 4 Art: We are thrilled to announce that San Diego's Poet Laureate, Jason Magabo Perez, will join us as both a guest studio artist and guest performer at our next Open Studios on Saturday, June 10 from 4:00-8:00 PM! Perez is passionate about using his post as Poet Laureate to demystify poetry and help people access the tools to express themselves through it. Thus, he will host a pop-up Poetry Lab where guests may mingle with him, watch (or join) him composing in action, and explore his other works on display. His time with us will culminate in a performance, perhaps even including a collaborative piece created during our event! As usual, most of our other visual arts studios will be open, and other S4A musicians will also perform. Bach: Prelude and Fugue in C Major, BWV 846 (from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Bk. 1) Rachmaninoff: Selected Preludes for Piano, Op. 23 Syzmanowski: Nine Preludes, Op. 1 Messian: Eight Preludes for Piano (1928/29) Jan Lisiecki’s interpretations and technique speak to a maturity beyond his age. At 29, the Canadian performs over a hundred yearly concerts worldwide. The New York Times reviewed his March 2024 Carnegie Hall Preludes concert, noting his playing has "...gentle judiciousness, aristocratic reserve and a touch that tends shadowy without losing a core of clarity." Lisiecki performs a program of preludes on the Jacobs Music Center stage, treating the audience to dozens of succinct, characterful works by Chopin, J. S. Bach, Rachmaninoff, Szymanowski and Messiaen. For Classical Special Concerts, only children ages five years and older will be allowed into the concert hall.
